Activation Problem

Having finally been forced to upgrade to XP +SP2 from W2K because a bit of
kit demanded it I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness UNTIL I tried
activating.

The machine doesn't actually hang but it doesn't get anywhere, lots of disk
activity and around 10% of processor time spent in MSOOBE.EXE (possibly also
some in WINLOGON.EXE.

Machine is a Dell Latitude C840 laptop that has run W2K happily for years.

Just to completely ruin my day, the new kit still doesn't work properly so I
could have stayed with tried and tested W2K.

Have you gone to the Dell website and downloaded the Windows XP driver
updates for your specific model?

If they do not have Windows XP drivers then that would be an
indication that your model is not Windows XP compatible.

Also Windows XP has vastly increased RAM requirements compared to
Windows 2000. If you are looking for reasonable performance from
Windows XP you need to have at least 512 mb of RAM, and even more if
you are loading large applications and/or working with huge data
files.

Good luck

Thanks but not the problem, certainly should and does support XP (I had to
order W2K specifically when I bought it).

The sole problem is that it won't run the XP activation program, that just
sits there for ever (or at least an hour till I got fed up) with a lot of
disk activity and about 10% CPU usage for MSOOBE.EXE which I presume is part
of the activation suite. Also a bit for WINLOGON.EXE.

Every once in awhile, an upgrade procedure may not go
as smoothly as planned. I would suggest performing a
"repair install" of Windows XP to correct your issue.
