W2K Won't Shut Down

We have a Dell laptop (Latitude C840) running W2K Pro SP2.
It often refuses to shut down, especially after a period
without rebooting. When this happens it does not respond to
the Power On/Off Button (unless it is held down for several
seconds to force power off), it does not respond to
Ctrl-Alt-Del, or to any of the Start/ShutDown options. Dell
techs advised us to update the BIOS to the latest revision,
which we have. Recently an unrelated (?) problem required
re-formatting the hard drive, reinstalling W2K and all
apps, which we hoped would end the shut-down problem; it
didn't. Does anyone know of a KB article or other source
dealing with such a problem?
