accessing tools, internet options in IE

D

dave

Recently, I wanted to modify my internet options, so as
usual I clicked on "tools", then "internet options.
Suprisingly, a message popped up saying "This operation
has been canceled due to restrictions in place on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I have no idea why all of a sudden I am getting this
message. Will you help me solve this problem??

I use Windows XP, and have Norton Virus software and use
the free version of Zone Alarm as a firewall.

Thank you in advance for your help.

ISSUE:

Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options

"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer.
Please contact your system administrator."

RESOLUTION:

Method 1:

(gpedit.msc only available on XP Pro)

Start > Run - type in "gpedit.msc" (without quotes).
Under User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, Windows Components,
Internet Explorer, Browser menus.
Double click the "Tools menu: Disable Internet Option... menu option."
In the Setting menu it should be checked on " Not configured"

If it is already set to "Not Configured", set it to "Disabled"
and then back to "Not Configured".

The Internet Options menu should be available again.

Method 2:

SPYBOT:

I can't access my IE settings any more!
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=faq&detail=24

Internet Explorer tells you to contact your administrator when you try to access the IE settings?
This can happen if you use Spybot-S&D in advanced mode and you have used the Immunize feature without reading all the text ;)

Please start Spybot-S&D again in advanced mode (usually from the Start menu group Spybot - Search &D Destroy, until you've already changed the desktop icon to advanced mode), and go to the Immunize page.
There you'll see a group Recommended miscellaneous options. Untick the checkboxes in front of both Lock IE... options. You may need to close all Explorer windows, and maybe even restart Windows before these changes take place.

Hint: this lock function has been added mostly for multi-user environments where you wouldn't want other users of your computer to change your IE settings. If you are the only user of your computer, there's no real need to enable them.
