a problem

Hi, I'm going to list my problem with my old computer and see if anyone
can help:

computer: HP pavilion 512n running windows xp

problem:

Windows won't start (it looks like it's starting but it stops at a blue
windows logo screen)
This happens even if I select safe mode from the F8 screen or any of
the other startup options.

What led up to the problem:

Initially, I mistakenly loaded Norton Internet Security while still
running Norton Antivirus (foolish, I know). This created all kinds of
problems with my computer freezing up. I tried to download a patch(?)
from Symantec that deleted all Norton programs from my computer. I
tried doing this about six times unsuccessfully. That's when the
problem started. Now I can't start-up my computer in safe (or any)
mode and end up at the aforementioned blue windows logo screen every
time.

Can anyone help?

If none of the windows startup options work, then there are two choices.
One is to try a repair install which should keep programs and data
intact; the other is a clean install which wipes programs and data.
Programs will need to be reinstalled from original media and data
restored from a backup.

Do yourself a favor and don't use Symantec / Norton NIS or anti-virus.
There are some good free or low cost alternative such (for anti-virus)
aVast, CA eTrust, and AVG; (for firewall) Sunbelt Software's Kerio
Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm; for anti-spyware and adware there is
Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, HiJackThis, Spyware Blaster.

Although clean-installing Windows is a last resort, since we are talking
about Norton products here I would suggest you restore your machine to
factory condition. If XP came preinstalled on your HP, you can press
F10 as the computer is starting up. Choose "Advanced" and do a complete
and destructive restore.

If you neglected to back up important data, then do this before you
restore the machine. It is possible to get data off a failed Windows
system with a rescue cd like Knoppix or a Bart's PE or by slaving the
drive in a working XP box. This takes a fair amount of skill. Only you
know if this will be something you can do yourself or if you should
take the machine to a professional computer repair shop for the data
recovery (if applicable).
