a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the licen

Win XP Home SP3
HP Pavilion a365c

After cleaning a virus I was no longer able to log onto Windows in either
Safe Mode or Normal. Windows would begin to load properly, log on, then log
off immediately. After searching around the internet I tried to replace the
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe file with one expanded from C:\Windows\i386,
using the recovery console.

That did not work. Then, using a BartPe disc, I tried to merge a backed up
copy of the entire registry that was made before the problem started but that
kept failing.

Next, again using BartPe, I loaded a hive into the registry by selecting the
HKey_Users branch and loading C:\Windows\System32\Config\ then unloading the
newly loaded hive.

This brought me to a new error: a problem is preventing windows from
accurately checking the license for this computer. error code 0x80090019.

This is where I am stuck at. I can't get into windows and Safe Mode loads
all the way through the warning message telling you you're in safe mode and
then explorer.exe doesn't load. I can however, get to Task Manager and from
there I tried to load explorer.exe which starts up and shuts down in a
moment. I can also get to regedit.

I would be happy if I could do a repair install but this machine did not
come with a WinXP disc. Instead it came with a recovery partition which, it
says, would require me to reinstall all of the programs I added to the
computer since it was new and I'm not sure I can locate all of the discs.

Anybody out there have any ideas for me? TIA.

try the steps to initiate
a system restore via
the kb below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449/

you can also open a
command prompt via
the task manager by
entering cmd via the
new task button.

db, thanks for your response. Unfortunately it did not work. After typing in
the command and pressing enter, I just go back to a command prompt.

its probably a lost
cause as far as trying
to repair the operating
system, though your
attempts are notable.

--------------------

you mentioned earlier
that you replaced the
registry hive.

try to undue it and
replace the current
hive with the one you
had.

then retry the steps
in the kb to initiate
system restore.

-------

the main problem with
having a preinstalled o.s.
is that without a viable
installation windows cd,

the user doesn't get all
the tools provided by
microsoft, like a repair
installation.

a repair installation would
replace missing or corrupted
system files with genuine
ones from the cd.

but even with the above,
if one has a windows xp sp2
cd but the computer is updated
to sp3, then sp3 would have
to be uninstalled before the
cd could initiate a repair.

in any case, keep us aprised
if you were able to restore
the previous registry successfully.

here is a site that
provides the instructions
to rescue your personal
files from the drive.

afterwards, you can
initiate a factory restore
with your recovery disks.

db,

Thanks for the suggestions. In the end it was indeed a lost cause. I
finally slaved the hdd to another machine and used Norton Save and Restore to
create a full drive backup, then did the recovery and finally moved files
using a flash drive.

I just don't get it with these manufacturers. Can't they just provide you
with your copy of Windows? I think that right now, Dell may be the only
company still doing that. Granted, it is harder to do a complete reinstall
but at least you get to choose what you want to do.

Thanks again,

Roberta

db

you're welcome.

pre-installed software
are cheaper than the
the full retail versions
of them.

however, pre installed
software lacks a number
of things that are only
provided with their retail
counterparts.

but as you may well
know by now, there has
always been a market
place battle for permitting
customers choose which
o.s., if any, they want on
with their purchased
computers.

the best choice would
be none, making the
purchase of the computer
less costly and allowing
the customer to buy the
preferred o.s. separately.

in any case, glad you
found an advanced method
to resolve your issue.
