I am having some minor issues with Windows XP Professional right now.
The first one is the system restore. When I try to run System Restore
it comes up with the Windows sending error message and then it shuts
it down.
The second issue is that every time I boot my computer up I get 3
messages related to hardware installation. I can document them
further if need be, but it basically comes up and says a new hardware
device has been found when there is nothing new to be found. The next
two messages are in conjunction with that. I normally just hit cancel
and go by them. I know this is not normal and my system didn't use to
do this. What can I do to fix these issues? Any help to get me
pointed in the right direction highly appreciated.

Hi Michael,

As for System Restore, it sounds like a corrupt file.

Go to Start - Run and paste the following command then press enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\

Delete rstrui.exe

It should be replace in a moment. When it is replaced, click on it to
start SR. Do you still get the error?

Okay, I will try that.

On a different note, I have a computer with Windows 98, and it is
missing a file called Aspienum.VXD on bootup. I thought the extension
..vxd was a antivirus file, but when I ran NAV install again it didn't
get rid of it.

I did that and it did what you said it would do. However when I tried
to run system restore it came up with the same error as before and
closed.

Hi Michael,

I was hoping that would work.

The next choice is to reinstall System Restore. Just be aware that all
existing restore points will be lost in the process.

How to reinstall System Restore:

This worked; it did ask me for a file off of my original XP
installation disc named SRFrame.MM, which I installed also.

System Restore is back; thanks!

The errors I get with the hardware are:

*Found new hardware, mass storage controller

*Welcome to the found new hardware wizard

*Found new hardware; a problem has occured during installation.

This has to be a corrupted file also.

You're welcome Michael,

As for the hardware issue, take a look in Device Manager for any issues.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties - Hardware tab - Device
Manager and look for any warnings.

There are no warnings in the Device Manager. I am fairly certain it
has something to do with the XP Software being corrupted for whatever
controls that area. It happened at the same time I lost system
restore.

Bert:
I am going to have to put this on hold for at least a week, but I have
printed off the documents you referred to and I will try this. I
think how this happened is my old hard drive was dieing and in the
process of using Acronis to bump my data and operating system over to
another drive, I ended up with some corrupt files. The storage device
I cannot identify. I will try this next week, after I back up all of
my data. I will repost and let you know how I made out.

I also found an answer for my Aspienum.vxd question on the Internet
from the Microsoft Knowlege base. It looks like a file that is needed
for an Adaptec program on that computer.
