Windows File Protection Error - Windows XP Professional

Yesterday, to free up some memory on my boyfriend's computer, I uninstalled a
few programs we were not using and haven't been using for quite some time
(i.e., AOL, Microsoft Picture It, etc). Then, I also performed a disk clean
up to remove temporary internet files, etc. I did not back up the computer
prior to doing any of this, as I thought I was only removing minor programs
that had nothing to do with Windows, as well as cookies, etc., which also
shouldn't have anything to do with Windows. Once the disk clean up finished,
an error message appeared which said the following:
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced with
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore
original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM
now.

I do not have (or at least I cannot find) the Windows XP Professional disk.
Is there any patch or something that could restore these files? I'm not even
sure what files they're referring to. I still have the pop-up open and the
only choices I have are retry, more information and cancel. More information
simply tells me that I either have no cd in my CD-ROM or it's the wrong one.
I'm assuming Retry is simply used once the disk is in the CD-ROM. I didn't
cancel the message so that I could remember what it said. Any help you can
provide me with to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jos,
Try system Restore for an earlier date and see if that will resolve the
issue, to access System Restore Click Start >> Programs >> Accessories >>
System Tools and select System Restore.

If no joy, get another Xp Pro from a friend or ask your Boyfriend about the
CD if you have before and try System Recovery, but please Back up if you
could before anything.
