Windows File Protection, Windows XP Home Edition

I was doing Disk Clean-up, when a Windows File Protection box popped up
saying:

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore
the original version of these files.

Insert your now."

I clicked on "More Information" and it read

"Possible reasons for this problem:
1. You have inserted the wrong CD, (i.e., a different Windows product CD
than the version installed)
2. The CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning."

I know I did not insert any such CD into my CD-ROM drive, and my CD-ROM
drive is functioning. I also do not know what CD to enter because it left it
out in the main window, just saying "Insert your now" Any ideas what might
be wrong, and how I should handle this?

It sounds like you have a preinstalled system without any setup CD to run
windows file protection (SFC utility). There is a registry entry to point
the utility at the ../i386 folder on your system that contains the setup
files.

Your "Installation Path" can be reset in regedit.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\... .

....Windows\Current Version\Setup: Service Source Path .Windows\Current
Version\Setup:
Source Path .
and
....WindowsNT\Current Version:
Source Path

change them to the directory with the XP Files

(For Pro Edition: )

GPEDIT.MSC Local Comp. Policy/Comp. Config/Admin. Templates/System "Specify
Windows Installation file location" (some report needing to press "r" for
'retry', quite a few times)
