I now have windows 98 SE as a operating system and would like to instal XP
pro over top. My comp is full of thousands of image and doc files not to
mention tons of software. Is it possible to instal XP over 98 and not loose
any of my files or software?... Any info would be great. Thanks, Keith

Just out of curiosity, why XP Pro? Why not XP Home? Most home
users have little need for the additional features that come
with XP Pro. Why spend the extra $100? That said, if you
haven't purchased the upgrade CD yet, you might want to take
your time and shop around. With a new version of Windows on the
horizon, it would appear that many retail outlets are offering
the upgrade version of XP at a substantial discount. I've
recently seen the XP Pro upgrade advertised for $99. 99 and the
Home version for $49.99.

Before you try any procedure as complicated as upgrading your
operating system, it's a good idea to back up any files you
cannot afford to lose to some sort of removable media such as a
CD or DVD. An external hard drive would also be an acceptable
location for your backup files. Most upgrades go smoothly but
it's always better to be safe than sorry. If all goes well,
after you upgrade all of your files and applications should
still be in place.

Before you run the upgrade, make sure you check system's
compatibility either through the upgrade CD or the Windows XP
Upgrade Advisor.

Take a look at these articles for more guidance on upgrading:

Theoretically you could use the retail box Windows XP UPGRADE. A lot of
people advocate a clean install after a hard disk format though. Those
people advocate re installation of the applications from the original
media and recovery of data from backups after the installation of the
new OS/ Unfortunately that procedure might not accommodate OEM versions
of applications that came with the computer and are installed as part of
an OEM hard disk image.

Yes, you can upgrade with a retail version of XP Pro, if you don't have
a backup of your data and you have a problem, your files may be lost. So
it is possible, but certainly not wise to depend on that being the case.

Sorry, you are in the wrong thread, and this is a newsgroup. You will
need to determine the appropriate driver and aquire same from the
hardware manufacturer.

Keith,

I never trust anything, Murphy Law. So if you have another drive or can buy
another drive (remember Win98 and old Pc's don't support drives much larger
than about 120GB). Install the second drive and copy anything of value over
to it. Remove the second drive and then upgrade to XP. If you can, a clean
install of XP would be the better approach, just make sure you have the
installation disks for all the applications that you are using. If you
decide to upgrade to XP (and everything went smoothly, test your apps and
check your files that you wanted to preserve) than add the second drive as a
backup or reformat it for more space.

Also check the remaining space on your original drive (you didn't say what
size it is) as an upgrade may gobble up a lot of space, leaving too little
for XP to operate at it best.

If you are going to continue to use all the programs and applications that
you are presently using, and if you are going to use the same peripheral
devices (e.g. printers etc) you may find that some of them do not work as
well as they did hitherto. You may be able to find drivers and updates for
hardware and software on the internet, but in some cases you may be
disappointed. Or you may be put to some other expense.

You might like to consider that XP is on the way out: Vista is on its way
soon. And Vista too will have its bugs and its Service patch. Remember that
your edition of 98 is second edition. If you can find an XP update dirt
cheap, then it may be an interesting experiment for you to use it. Otherwise
I would be inclined to hold fire until you see what better is coming down the
pike. And whatever you do, back up to CD, DVD or external hard drive all your
files and data.

You also have to consider whether you have on your current computer
sufficient RAM or a large enough hard drive to support Windows XP plus
Service Patch 2 plus updates. Do not be led astray by statements you may have
seen as to the minimum computer requirements for XP. It takes much more than
the minimum requirements to wotk properly.

Good luck.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
