I have installed windows 98 and partition my hardisk. I installed windows 98
in C drive then I installed Windows xp pro in D drive. When I boot the PC it
boots straight into XP. It does not show if windows 98 is installed. I
reinstalled windwos 98 onto C drive agan this time it boots straight into 98
and does not show any XP installed at all.

What I am doing wrong.

Hi John,

You need a boot manager. I use Boot Magic, part of Partition Magic, to
handle my Win98, Me, W2K, XP, Linux partitions. BootIt NG is another:

The Windows XP setup should have seen the older operating system and
taken the steps necessary to allow for multi-booting. Lets see if we
can fix this without too much fuss.

A few questions to start with:

1- Are your drives (C & D) two different physical hard disks or are
they simply two different partitions on the same hard disk?

2- While logged on to the Windows XP installation look on your hard
drives and tell us where (on which drive) the following files are located:

ntldr
ntdetect.com
boot.ini

These are hidden system files so you will have to go in your Folder
Options and unhide them. If all is well the files should be in the root
of C:\, the drive where Windows 98 is installed. Are they in the right
place?

3- Do you see a file called bootsect.dat in the root of the Windows 98
drive (C:\)?

4- Can you copy and paste the contents of your boot.ini file here?
