46C Drive, Will ThIS cool it??

My hard drive (Maxtor 6L080P0 with firmware BAJ41G20), case on or off,
is running 44-46C at all time [idle or not] and it's going to kill it.

I need a way to cool this drive. I need an opinion on this product.
This drive cooler looks like it would do the job, but their is NO
description of how it installs OR how it looks once it's installed.

Does any of you know anything about this product , how it mounts or
even if it will make any drop in temp??
I'm trying to get below 40C.

If this product in your opinion is a piece of crap, please suggest
something in the near price range thanks.

If you'll settle for one that mounts the HD in a 5 1/4 drive bay,

Here's one that I've used a few times. It has two fans on the front that
blow back across the drive, and the fans are temprature controlled.

The front panel has a dual temp readout in either C or F that displays the
temp from two thermocouples that are included. One thermocouple gets
fastened to the top of the hard drive, and the other is long enough for you
to place it anywhere inside your case.

Look at the enlarged view, it clearly bolts on to the top of the drive.

Corse it will.

Have a look at the reviews on that site.
If this product in your opinion is a piece of crap,

It isnt that, but an intake fan on the front of the case blowing
over the drives can be a better approach, particularly if you
can have a free slot above the drive. You will need one for
that thermaltake fan anyway.

Thats undesirable in winter, as you say.

Don't bother cooling your HDD. It's not necessary. HDDs have been
running just fine for many years without any cooling components. Just
worry about your CPU and GPU temperatures.

What that cooler will do, is circulate more of the computer case
air, past the drive. Which is fine, if the drive is in a cramped
spot with no circulation at all. That may be all it needs.

But the thing is, the computer case air temperature is really important.
If the computer case air temperature is 44-46C and the drive is 44-46C,
then that fan would do no good at all. Which is why the suggestion to
bring cool room air across the surface of the drive makes more
sense. I have one computer case, where I fitted an external fan in
an aluminum framework, just for that very purpose, of pushing cool
room air across the drives mounted next to the fan.

Cooling works by "delta T". No temperature difference, no cooling.
If drive is 46C, and room air temp is 25C, then a gust of room
air will cool it.

Also, you can verify the drive temperature, by placing a digital
temperature sensor on top of the drive casing. Not all temperature
sensing schemes work equally well, and an external thermometer kit
can be used as a double check of what is going on.

I use something similar to this, for measuring temps. Mine is
battery powered, so I cannot afford to leave it running. I
hate wasting batteries.

So this BLOWS DOWN on the drive?

What kind of temp drop would I expect?

Maxtor 6L080P0 is a fairly average IDE 7200 rpm Drive ...I can see no way
that it should be
running at 45C ALL THE TIME ??? Are you sure the reading is correct ???
Unless maybe it was stuck right up in a case corner inside a plastic bag to
save putting in
a bay & sitting right on top of a Hot DVD burner..and its the main hard
working system Disk .
(I have done that & after 18 months it showed failure )

Otherwise with usual mounting arrangement it should be nice n warm to touch
only.
Get it in a 3.5" bay with some space around it & SHOULD be fine (& only
warm)

There must be something wrong ...check BIOS ...IDE line voltages set high ?
Do you have other drives to compare with.
What's the PSU voltages like..
That 45C ain't normal.

There has to be a problem with the OP's case reference to cooling. I
am running 3 Maxtor hard drives including the same one the OP mentions.
My 80gig is running at 31C according to Everest. The other 2 at 33C.

That isnt clear, I'd expect it does, but they dont say.
What kind of temp drop would I expect?

Depends on how the drive is designed heat dissipation wise and the airflow achieved.
