2K to XP Upgrade Problem: Missing File?

N

Ninjakitten

I'm trying to upgrade from 2K to XP, but am getting a "File Copy Error" which
says that "An error occurred copying file a8s8ubqp.sys to
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\a8s8ubqp.sys. The files is missing. Contact your system
administrator."

It says I can retry the copy, skip the file, or exit Setup. Retrying does
nothing, and I don't know whether it will work if I skip the file, because I
can't find any reference to a8s8ubqp.sys anywhere online. What is it? Do I
need it? Why is it asking for a file that's apparently not on my CD in the
first place?

If it matters, this is an old disc -- Corporate edition pre-service-packs.
Can I safely skip this file and do the upgrade without losing all my data?
If not, how can I get this file?

Thanks for any help.

That file is not a valid win sys file.
It means your system is infected by virus/trojan/malaware

That's sure what it looks like...
better repair your win2k install

or else back up your data and perform a clean install of XP

Thank you for answering, but that seems less than certain -- I keep my system
checked and monitored, and I've just rechecked it with multiple tools.
Nothing untoward was found.

The .sys file in question is not a file ON my system, it's a file the CD is
asking for during setup. Shouldn't the CD already have all the files it
needs?

On the other hand, after having restarted, it has the same error when I try
to use setup, but gives a different 'missing' file Setup wants to copy from
the CD -- aeyk6d59.sys. I agree the apparently random names are virus-y
behaviour, but it doesn't make sense, and since none of avast, spybot, or
adaware show anything wrong with my box, there's not a lot I can do if it IS
some kind of malware.

So, does anyone have any OTHER explanations, suggestion, and/or solutions?
Thanks.

Don't suppose your license key starts with FCKGW?
I'll betcha a real licensed CD would work.
I wouldn't worry about missing a file that shouldn't be there.
I'd worry more about stuff that IS there that shouldn't be.
You won't lose any data because you BACKED UP YOUR SYSTEM BEFORE
YOU STARTED THE UPGRADE!!!.

No, my license key doesn't start with FCKGW. The CD I'm using is a burnt
copy of the original corporate CD, which worked on a previous installation
(from nothing, not an upgrade). The original CD is in another state; the key
is legal, unused, and mine (and thanks very much for your rudely implied
assumption otherwise, by the way).

I did, in fact, back up my system before I started the upgrade, but for some
STRANGE reason I'd rather not have to spend a few extra hours using that
backup to copy my data back and then reinstall most of my programs if I can
avoid it.

According to the various antivirus and antispyware programs I have
available, there doesn't appear to be anything that "IS there that shouldn't
be", as I already said. Of course, clearly =something= isn't right, or the
setup would be going smoothly.

Do you have any useful and specific ideas for what might be causing the
problem or how I might solve it, or do you just get off on accusing me of
being an idiot and/or a thief? If the latter, please go get your jollies
elsewhere. Thanks.

I suspect your cd may be bad. Does it have scratches on the surface? Maybe
polishing it will help. Also, is there writing with a sharpie to identify it?
The solvents can leak into the coating and cause errors, or the condition of
that coating may cause errors if it is scratched at all. Have you tried the
cd on another box?
As you stated earlier, I cannot find the files you said it wants on the
internet, security sites nor my XP box. Last possibility, your cd drive might
benefit from cleaning, however remote that might be.

I selected "skip" and then ESC to restart manually, found the
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\ folder and found a config file that referred to the random
..sys file that was missing, deleted the contents of the file except for the
header, saved, restarted, and was on my way to upgrading!
I never did find out what exactly caused this, as neither Ad-Aware nor AVG
found anything wrong, but I suspect it was a virus. Maybe I'll still have
said Virus under XP. Yay.
