Missing system file in upgrade from win 2k to win xp pro

I recently bought a new Windows Xp Pro Upgrade CD.
Upon inserting the CD and choosing the upgrade path the setup program
appeared to get about 95% of the way through copying the setup files to my
hard drive before popping up a message saying that the file 'a2xulrw7.sys'
was missing and did i want to retry, skip or cancel.
Retrying had no effect and I foolishly then chose the skip option thinking
it might be possible to go without it.
This section of the setup process then completed and the system rebooted.
The system then auto chose the Win XP setup option on startup but after
going the check for system config and restarting the setup process again, all
I now see is a black screen with the message "The file a2xulrw7.sys could not
be found. Press any key to continue"
After pressing any key I get the message "Setup failed. Press any key to
restart your computer"
Doing this then goes through this process round and round unless I use the
arrow keys to bootup the original Windows 2000 option in which case I then
get the message that "Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. You can attempt to repair
this file by starting the Windows Setup using the original CD-ROM. Select 'r'
at the first screen to start repair'.
Unfortunately selecting r and then the fastrepair option does not appear to
fix anything and now not only have i not been able to upgrade to xp but i
cannot even boot in my original win 2k .

I'd be grateful for any advice on how to fix one or both or these problems.

Thanks Jaymon

I've had a look at the xprepairinstall link and I dont appear to have the
repair install option available.

I'm guessing that this is maybe due to the fact I never actually got as far
as getting xp installed when i tried the upgrade?

Unfortuntely as the failed upgrade also seems to have corrupted something to
do with the windows 2k install as I mentioned before, I cant get into that
either so not sure what I can do.

I don't no how you feel about recovery of your data ie.. whether it was that
critical or if you indeed had it backed up properly to start..? I can offer a
link that may provide you a GPL tool called TestDisk read through the page
throughly and use a boot disk to see if you can find your old partitions and
perhaps rebuild the MBR..
May be a long shot if the install scrambled the system..May need to setup
the drive as a slave on another computer to run Testdisk. I've only used it
in a dos box in XP..

Cheers and best wishes this holiday season..

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86:
http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the
hard drive maufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If
both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard
manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.
