2000 and XP machines can't ping eachother

I'm trying to bring in a new XP Pro laptop into my home network. 3 machines
are wired to the router (Netgear) which is connected to the cable modem.
The new laptop was totally plug and play as far as connecting to the
internet, but it can't seem to connect to the other 2 machines.

The other two machines are Win 98 and Win 2000 Pro.

My first concern is connecting the 2000 and XP machines. I've run the the
Home Office Network setup wiz. on the XP machine and it is assigned to my
home workgroup name. When I go to browse on the XP machine, I see the
workgroup name, but it doesn't find ANY machines other than itself. When I
go to browse on the 2000 machine, it "sees" the XP machine, but it can't
connect. It get weirder: The W98 machine can ping the XP machine and the XP
machine can ping it back, but the 2000 and XP machines cannot ping
eachother. I moved the XP laptop over to the 98 jack just to be sure it's
not the wiring, and it still can't ping the 2000 machine.

Any insight or suggestions? Call in a specialist?

Thanks.

Before calling in the specialist, get some of the basic stuff
out of the way:
- Turn off your internal firewalls, especially those bundled
with your virus scanner.
- Force all network adapters to 10 MBits/s half duplex.
- Start a Command Prompt on each machine, run the
following command, then post the contents of each
c:\test.txt in your reply:
ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt
