2 PC's , DLink DI-704P router, cannot get network to work

Hi to all:
I have both computers hooked to a DLink DI-704P router
which is inturn connected to a Cable modem. I can connect
to the internet no problem with either BUT when I deceided
to network them together (both XP pro) I followed the
wizard and cannot see each other. I get 2 unique IP
address from my IP provider which are assigned via DCHP.
I would prefer NOT to use ICS as this entails having the
Host on all the time so the 2nd PC can use the internet
thru the router. What happens if the pc dies, probably no
internet for the second pc. SOOO could some kind soul
please explain/point me in the right direction to network
these 2 together with the router so that there is no host
(if possible). The router has a build in firewall and I
have tested it and it seems to work great.

Thanks in advance.

James,

your isp should assign the dlink router an ip address. and
all the computers that is connected to the dlink router
would receieve and internal address from the dlink router.
Most likely 192.168.0.x if you kept it to the default.
That address is a non routable address assigned from the
dlink dhcp server.

You should not have to configure internet connection
sharing (ICS).

If you are trying to share files and printers on your
network, make sure your work group name is the same.

1. right click my computer and click properties
2. under computer name tab click on the button change.
then under the section member of make sure both computers
has the same workgroup name.

Also make sure you have file and printer sharing for
Microsoft Networks protocol enabled.

1. Right Click on My network places and go to properties.

2. Under the section Lan or High Speed Connection, right
click on Local Area Connection and go to properties.

3.Under This connection uses the following items section.
Make sure File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
is checked, and Client for Microsoft Networks is checked.
If you do not see these option click the install button
and add these options.

After all configurations are made restart your computer.

You say you get 2 unique IP addresses from your IP provider which are
assigned via DHCP.
Can you explain what you mean by this please?

Open a command prompt then type in ipconfig /all Please copy all the info
for both pcs and post them back here please.
Turn off any firewalls on the pcs (especially windows own), make sure
they're both in the same workgroup and that you've enabled file sharing on
both pcs. Create a shared folder on each, just for testing purposes.
Look through some similar threads for today. The MVPs have posted lists of
hints on some of them.
