Cannot Browse Network

P

Paddy

Two PCs, both running Windows XP Professional SP2. Cable broadband modem,
via D-Link DI-704P router.

* I used XP's Network Set-up on both PCs, using the same Workgroup name.
* Both PCs can ping each other by name.
* Both PCs can both access internet via the router and cable broadband modem
* Both PCs can "find" each other using My Network Places | Search for
Computers ...
* Both PCs can access each others shared folders/drives - but only *IF*
those folders/drives are created by "Add a Network Place" - meaning that the
"Browse" function of that utility CAN see the shared folders/drives on the
other PC.

Thus the network seems to be working happily, to an extent - certainly
functionally.

However, in Windows Explorer | My Network Places | Entire Network |
Microsoft Windows Network, after some seconds, Workgroup appears; try to
expand it (or double click) and a further long delay, then nothing.

I have disabled ICS and Windows firewall. I am running Kaspersky 7 Internet
Security Suite, with its firewall disabled. I have Googled and chased many
rabbits down holes.

Ideas?

TIA

Paddy

Sounds like computer browser issue. You may want to use browstat to
troubleshoot it. Or this search result may help.

Computer BrowserHow do I know I have a computer browser problem How to
disable Master Browser in XP .... You have a master browser issue if you
have the following symptoms. ...

Paddy,

Kaspersky is currently being seen here as Norton was a few months ago - it has a
component in it which causes problems with Windows Networking, as which can't be
resolved by other than un installing the product itself.

If the problem is NOT related to Kaspersky, diagnose it with logs from "browstat
status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation",
from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks, Chuck. I uninstalled Kaspersky from both PCs, and voilà !

Both PCs can exchange everything up to, but not including, bodily fluids :)
..... and both can see each other and browse each others' shared
folders/drives in:

Windows Explorer
+My Network Places
+Entire Network
+Microsoft Windows Network
+Workgroup
+PC1
All PC1's Shared Folders/Drives
+PC2
All PC2's Shared Folders/Drives

Now to re-install Kaspersky component by component (anti-virus;
anti-spyware; anti-spam etc and check network browsing ability at each step.

Question - with cable internet via a D-Link (cabled) router, do I need a
software firewall of any sort, Kaspersky? Windows XP firewall?

Thanks, Chuck

And more power to all the Great Guru MVPs!

Chuck, thanks.

All OK - I re-installed Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 7 - all components
EXCEPT the firewall:
File Anti-virus
Mail Anti-virus
Web Anti-virus
Proactive Defence
Privacy Control
Parental Control
Anti-Spam
..... on both PCs.

Network Places displays, and can browse, the shared folders/drives of both
PCs.

Thanks

Sounds like a typical problem with the Kaspersky firewall, Paddy. I hope that
you can setup a firewall, maybe the Windows Firewall. It's best to keep your
protection layered.
