Can't share files or folders over home network.

I have two computers hooked to a DLink router. Internet connection works fine on both machines thus eliminating router and cabling issues, but I cannot share folders between the two PCs even though they both ping one another just fine!

I have run the network setup wizard on both PCs. PC "A" can see PC "B", but it cannot see the shared folders on PC "B". PC "B" cannot even see PC "A".

Both machines are running WinXP Pro. The workgroup is the same on both machines - "HOME." I've tried uninstalling network services on both and reinstalling--same results every time. I have shared folders on both machines. I've checked to be sure they are on the same workgroup. I have "Client for Microsoft Networks", "File and Printer Sharing", and "TCP/IP" installed on both machines.

I can't figure it out. Can you?

I have both computers hooked to a DLink DI-704P router
which is inturn connected to a Cable modem. I can connect
to the internet no problem with either BUT when I deceided
to network them together (both XP pro) I followed the
wizard and cannot see each other. I get 2 unique IP
address from my IP provider which are assigned via DCHP.
I would prefer NOT to use ICS as this entails having the
Host on all the time so the 2nd PC can use the internet
thru the router. What happens if the pc dies, probably no
internet for the second pc. SOOO could some kind soul
please explain/point me in the right direction to network
these 2 together with the router so that there is no host
(if possible). The router has a build in firewall and I
have tested it and it seems to work great.

Ok guys try this, for routers go to the router and
disable dhcp, next go to your connection properties and
right click your Lan connection and select properties,
next tcp/ip rightclick and select properties, next assign
it and ip address using same format as router and subnet
mask, next put the ip address of the router in the
default gateway, next put in your isp dns server ip
address, click ok and ok again. Do this on all machines
having a differant ip for each. One note I found that I
try and stick to is newest and smartest to oldest. From
newest first ping router if replies are received ping
next machine, next on newest create a share lets say the
c drive right click C drive in explorer and select new
share, name the share c only nothing else. go to security
tab and set your preferances. Go to second machine and do
a search for computer ip address of first unit. when
found double click and put in user name administrator and
password if any is used to logon locally to that machine
and click ok. If there is a remember check box check it.
On XPh it may come up administator\computer name, change
computer name to the machine name you are connecting to
and use the password of the local logon of that machine,
you should now be able to see all the shared folders.

Firewall on 2nd machine??

.
If you have simple internet sharing turned off, then
make sure you have alternate accounts set up on each
machine that duplicate your logon with same password.
Also go into permissions and enable either unique user
or "everyone".

Try re-running the Network Wizard and select the option
that you have no internet connection, then both computers
will connect through the router, which has its own IP
address. Maybe.
