100% CPU Usage

Dan

WinXP Home, P4, 1.6ghz, 512mb ram, Radeon 9800 Pro video 128mb, Creative SB
Audigy 2ZS .
When ever I try and install a new program my computer slows down to a crawl.
Recently got smart and checked task manager and it showed 100% CPU Usage.
As soon as I stopped the install, usage reverted back to between 1 and 5%.
Some programs i.e. Roxio Easy Media Creator, will not install. Starts the
installation then freezes.
Have run the following programs:
1. Panda Titanium Antivirus and have run check-no problems
2. CounterSpy - no problems
3. Spyware Blaster - no problems

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt363.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

Also try:

AD Aware SE
Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.2
CWShredder

and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1.

You should also:

1) Empty temporaary files and Internet caches.
2) Defrag hard drive

To install Roxio Easy CD Creator, you need at least version 6. Older
version may not work , may not completely install and may cause XP to to
boot.

Never had a problem with Roxio EZ CD Creator on WinXP SP2 as long as the Roxio v5.3.x update
was installed.

It'd be helpful to know what precisely is using the CPU time - what program
is chewing all of those cycles? You are in Task Manager already, so what
program shows the usage?

P.S. None of your three products listed is a favorite of mine (not that you
were asking!) - David has good recommendations, though I'd likely just start
with a free online scan from Trend (to check for any currently running
viruses or trojans). Though tell us first what program is using the CPU
cycles - is it the install program itself? Have you disabled those three
programs for the installation? Sometimes virus scanners wreak havoc with
installs...
