CPU Usage

Dan

My CPU usage jumps to 100% with just one program open. Have run virus check
with Panada AntiVirus, spyware check with CounterSpy, AdAware SE, SpyBot
Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster & CWShredder.
Defraged using Disk Keeper but still have problem.
Running
P4, 1.6g. 512ram, Ati Radeon Pro 128 mb graphic and Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Gamers sound card, 3 hard drives with over 200 mb of empty space and WinXp
Home,
..Can't even add any new programs because resources in task manager jump to
100% and everything freezes.
Any suggestion would be helpful!! Do I need more Ram?

Hi Dan,
Start with ALT-CTRL-DEL and check processes tab. See what you've got running
amok in there.

Do ctrl alt del to open Task Manager. Go to process tab and click the cpu
column to line up the running programs by CPU usage. You can then see which
program is using all the cpu cycles. Repost if you need further info.

After you open Task Mgr and sort the processes by CPU utilization and find
the culprit(s) eating up your processor-time, click on the process then
rt-click it to bring up the Context Menu.
Look for "Set Priority and just HOVER over that (don't click it or on any of
the choices) and see what the setting is. The vast majority of the time a
process should run at "Normal" priority. If these CPU-hoarding process(es)
are set at anything above that, then you should tells us what they are and
their settings before going too much further.
But if you can identify these processes and know how to go further, by all
means, good luck!

Hi Dan,

Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the following
columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give you details
as to which process is accessing the disk.

In the meantime, as I noted you have run some of these programs, but re-run
them now, all of them:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

The process eating up all my CPU resources is MSIEXEC.EXE, it is jumping
around from 23,172k to 76,428k.
