100% cpu usage on startup

Frequently when I boot up Windows XP I find 100% cpu usage makes the system
almost unusable.

Systemidle never shows anything but 0%
System (not otherwise identified) absorbs all cpu availablility with
momentary spans to other processes or programs trying to open.

I notice that inernet explorer grabs a few milliseconds even though it has
not been opened.

To cure the problem, I shut off power and restart using the on off switch.

Sometimes I have to do this a couple times.

Then suddenly, I get a normal startup and everything runs normally with
Systemidle proces having plenty of cpu to pass around.

I have 1 gigabyte memory and plenty of file space. I run maintenance
utilities regularly and also run AdSubtract frequently clearing spyware.

Anyone have similar problem.

This link talks about the system process:

It surjests checking your device drivers if you are having excess cpu usage
here. So are all you device drivers up to date?

As for IE running, could any your programs calling home for updates?

You could also go to any of the variou sites that do on-line virus scans,
just to be certain that you have not picked anything nasty up. Also check
out Ad-aware and Spybot search and destory to back up the findings of your
Adsubtract. Both there programs are free to use.

Thanks.

It appears that my drivers are up to date. I have downloaded Spybot and
run it to clean out the spyware

but, I still have the problem. It seems to be off doing something about
every third time I start up. Power down and re-powering is the only thing
that appears to stop it. That triggers a disc check which I allow to run on
startup.

I'm going to read the paper on System that you suggested and see if I can
find anything there.

Thanks for the suggestions.
