CPU @ 100%

The last two days CPU usage has been at a constant 100%. I ran AdAware &
Spybot and Norton virus scan and didn't find any problems. I turned off
ZoneAlarm Pro also, and usage continued @ 100%. When checking Task Mgr I
noticed that Outlook.exe continued to run and use CPU even though Outlook
wasn't running. I stopped Outlook.exe and CPU returned to normal.
Starting & stopping Outlook does not replicate the problem. I am running
Windows
XP Home Edition on a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with 768 Mb of RAM.

Anyone have any ideas on what is going on here?

Thanks for your help!

One of mine did the same thing yesterday, spent 2 hours that way.
Couldn't even launch task manager. Unplugged the Ethernet cable
which brought it back to life. Scanned it and found nothing untoward.

Plugged the Ethernet cable back in, and it went and found the update
pack and installed it. So the slowdown was probably due to high congestion
for the large update pack issued. Gotta remember the first Tuesday of the
month...

Dear BobT,

Yes, you probably have the recent svchost problem. An unintentional bug
introduced by Windows Update.

First you need reboot and login. Then as *fast as possible stop the
Automatic Updates service* before your PC becomes unusable.

Start / Run -type in -> net stop wuauserv and click ok.

OK now relax...

1) You need to load the new update client:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2) Then this patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=927891

After applying the above updates - svchost still runs high CPU usage
*but* not 100% only 88 - to 97 % and drops down more often. The PC is
quite responsive compared to the old 100% lockups.

Problem fixed.

Good luck,

Is Outlook.exe spiking to near-100% CPU? If not, what is?

The following is courtesy of MVP Emeritus Ottmar Freudenberger:

First, install this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Now install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update Agent
3.0, v7.0.6000.374, for 32 bit machines (*not* Vista or any x64 version of
Windows!):
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

The MS update team believes that this solves all three svchost problems that
folks have been experiencing. See

(First try the steps posted May 4th at the beginning of the article.)

Workaround: Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update: Go
to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check). cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901037

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:
