Getting low on ideas here, you say you're running Nortons/Symantec - are you
running Internet Security including the Firewall.
If you are, bring up NIS and check your configuration in the Firewall. Check
your level of security - have you got it blocking everything? For example, are
you blocking activex settings. Have a look at your manual that came with
Nortons - look under Personal Firewall, select Configure, What is your slider
at, high, medium or low?
Click on custom level - it brings a dialog box, You'll see an Activex Control
Security box - have you set this on block all?

Thank you for your reply. I tried to download JAVA but the ...prohibit
running ActiveX ... message came up again! I can't win.
I just got my laptop in December. Do you think I did something wrong when I
initially turned on my computer? Do you think I need to delete everything in my
system and reload it? I think I remember a message about ActiveX coming up when
I first started working on my computer and maybe I did the wrong thing ... you
know ... picked the wrong box. I need help. Thanks again. Lissa H

Thank you for your help. I give up on Microsoft Internet Explorer. I called Dell Support and they recommended Mozilla 1.5 so I am going with that. Do you know anything about Mozilla? I never heard of it. I feel like the guy at Dell is smarter than me when it comes to PCs so I am going to take his advice. However, I must do some research. I believe the gentleman mentioned redoing my operating system. Maybe he doesn't feel like walking me through that?!?!

Thanks again! Lissa

Mozilla is an open-source (essentially free) project that has developed
the Gecko browser 'engine', which is used in NetScape 7.x and several
other new-generation browsers. They are more feature packed and
configurable than I.E.

There is a nice, slimmed-down NetScape 7.1 "Compact" build available at...
http://WWW.HOLGERMETZGER.DE/net7comp.html

It strips out the bloat, while retaining and enabling the best features of
Mozilla and NetScape 7.1. CUSTOM install, to further refine what you will
use. There will be no more NetScape browsers, but the Gecko technology
continues to be developed at Mozilla.org. Customization details are
available at these sites...

http://uFAQ.org
http://www.holgermetzger.de/net6e.html
http://techaholic.net/ns7.html

Alternatively, drop by at http://Mozilla.org and download either the
Mozilla suite (mail/news included), or the separates, Thunderbird and
Firebird. Avoid "nightly" Mozilla builds; they are for developers. 1.4
is virtually the same as NetScape 7.1. 1.5 is very similar, but more
recent. Release of the final 1.6 is due shortly, as I recall. The site
has all the details.

Are we all using Norton?? My problem started 5 days ago with Security Alerts1005,1 and 1005,3. Went to Tools/Internet Options and I followed Nortons prompts and changed the settings to allow Active X and I still cannot get to secure pages ( any pages including Microsoft security and Dell help)for help. Have done uninstall and reinstall 4 times ( NortonSystemWorks2003) and now have no virus protection. Will getting rid of all Norton Products solve this??? Any suggestions....? Thanks

Hi Nedummy,

When you make changes to the "Internet" zone on how IE handles ActiveX
controls in "Internet Options" it applies to every web page you will ever
visit. This leaves your computer vunerable to folks with less than noble
intentions... :)

If you open Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, and click "Trusted Sites"
you can add web sites that you know and trust, giving them less severe
restrictions.
Note: if all your sites do not begin with HTTPS you will need to uncheck the
box that says "Require Server Verification".

You can then set a "Custome Level" for trusted sites by Clicking on it the
Trusted Sites icon (on the security tab / previous screen) and then clicking
"Custom Level". But, just adding a page to trusted sites should do the trick
as the default level is pretty trusting...

You should also click on "Internet" and click "Default Level" to reset the
security for that zone.

Hope that helps.

I have done everything that has been suggested( trusting people on here) and have visited several sites but could not "get in
I even cannot access Protect Your System at tne Microsoft Support site nor can I access a virus check at tech support
I am really frustrated. I have now uninstalled Norton via Change/Remove thru Control Panel-Do I have to go to system folders and delete Norton there ,too, to get totally rid of it???{ Last Clean Sweep/Live update allowed per the log says 3/2
Thanks for your help

I was also extremely puzzled by this problem for a long time. I discovered, quite serendipitously, that there was an extra user account on the system named 'Microsoft ASP.NET...' and deleted it accordingly. This fixed everything! I hope this helps someone!

Hi Mike,

And this relates to the subject? Would be an interesting note, if so. Let
us all know.)

why not change your IE security settings to enable ActiveX (although
that a security risk that you should think about). What else have you
broken by killing this standard account?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
