XP's CD Writer cannot write to CD but can erase

Using SP2, I replaced my CD with a CDRW. XP picked up a the correct model. I
set the Write properties tab of the drive.

Testing, I found that XP's CD Writer could erase any RW CD but cannot write
to any CD. I always end up with the applet stating that it cannot write to
the CD. The IMAPI service is set to Automatic.

To see if there was a conflict with other software, I booted into safe mode
and the same problem occurred.

I then installed NERO and it works fine.

I am curious what could be causing the problem with XP's CD Writer.

If you were trying to save or drag and drop directly to CD, this is known as
packet writing and XP does not support that function natively. This
requires third party software such as the Direct CD component of Easy CD
Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

If I had to guess the issue based on the information you've given, I would
assume you were trying to perform the above mentioned function which is not
supported natively in XP's built-in CD burning capability.

The built-in cd burning capabilities of XP are not as full-featured as
that which are in third-party programs like Nero. Since you have Nero,
use it and enjoy it. To prevent any problems, you should go to the icon
for your cdrw drive in My Computer, right-click it, and disable CD
burning (uncheck the box) on the appropriate tab.

I was not trying to drag and drop directly. The files would be pasted to the
CD/RW drive and then the function of Write to the CD was selected after the
selection of files was completed.

This method has worked on all my client computers with the same drive. The
only difference I could see is that I added the drive before updating to SP2
while my computer SP2 went in first.

While I appreciate your response, I am still curious why only on my computer
I have this problem. On all my clients' computers where the CD was upgraded
prior to SP2, I can get 'Write these files to the CD' to work.

The IMAPI service provided just plain does not work with some drives -
and seems no better with some recent ones than with those old when XP
came out. If it does not work, cut your losses and use something else
like Nero (and perhaps its InCD if you want true drag and drop to CD-RW,
which the inbuilt burning doesn't do anyway)

Since I've only used the built-in cd burning on clients' machines
because it is so lame, I'm not an expert on that part of XP. Here is a
link to a page about the subject by MVP Alex Nichol (who *is* expert
about it).

Alex, Mike,
I have the same problem after upgrade the windows-home to SP2,
I have disabled the imapi service and disable writing in the CD writer,
I have nero 5.5 and neither is capable to write into the CD-R,
When I start the nero burner it show a "Image driver" no the actual
CD drive, do you know how I can fix this?
Thank You in advance.

Given that Nero 5.5 wasn't even designed for XP, that's likely the issue.
The fact it worked before SP2 does not mean the product was borderline.
Check the Nero website, www.nero.com for compatibility information and
updates. Perhaps they have an update that will make it compatible, see if
they are supporting it in XP and SP2.

If they are and you have all the updates, you'll need to contact their tech
support, this is their issue.

I'm using Nero 5.5 with SP2 installed and have not run into any
problems. I use it to burn CDs and DVDs. It did, however, come
bundled with my DVD writer and may be different from the generic
version 5.5 of Nero.

Too many different hardware and software configurations and other variables
involved. When a user has an issue such as this and their version was made
for OS versions prior to the current versions the user using, the first
thing to check is whether or not their updates to bring it up to spec for
current versions or if that fails, to move to a new version.

I dont see the original to reply to so here goes.
In Nero close the wizard if open. Go to Recorder > select recorder. Or
Crtl+R now select the drive you wish to use Ok and bobs ya Uncle
