Having problems with my CD-RW on my laptop running under
Windows XP. CD-Rw is a Toshiba DVD-Rom Sd-R2012 and it
appears that the software Xp is using is CDROM.SYS
IMAPI.SYS REDBOOK.SYS and STOPPROP.DLL.
- When I write files onto a CD-R I can (sometimes but not
always)at a later stage add more files without a problem.
- When I write files onto a CD-RW I can only write files
once. If in a later session I try to add files it tells
me that the CD is full. Message "Insert writable disc to
continue. The disc in the drive is not a writable CD or
it is full." In contradiction to this I can just
occasionally add an extra file but then only once !!
- When I try to erase a CD-RW it goes OK for a few
seconds then hangs totally on "5 seconds to go" and also
pretty well hangs up the PC. Only way out is to reboot
and the CD is then utterly naffed and unrecognizable to
the laptop. Also unreadable by my other PC in both the
normal CD drive and the external CD (Omega) writer (which
uses Adaptec DirectCD writer (which also has problems but
I will deal with those later !!).
HELP.
I called TIME who advised me that my laptop's XP did not
have any CD-RW software to go with it's CD-Rewriter
hardware and I would need to get some. Foolishly I
believed him. I tried to install Adaptec DirectCD but it
was old version and XP objected. Uninstalled it and then
had to updated Registry etc as it didnt get rid of a
couple of the drivers. Reasonably confident it has also
gone and clean now and don't beleive connected to the
problems as I had them before I put the Adaptec software
on.
So:
? Is it normal to be able to add files to a CD-R in
several different sessions.
? Should I be able to Erase files from a CD-R or is that
the option not available on a CD-R. That I can fill it
over time but never then clear it down.
? Should I be able to add files to a CD-RW in several
sessions. If so what is it I am doing wrong which
prevents this.
? Why can't I erase a CD-RW once it has files on it
? Should I be able to format a CD-R or CD-RW - if so have
no idea how as the Format button is always blanked out.
Should mention that I am only writing Photo and Word
documents to the CDs. ie. not using Media player / music.
If anyone could advise I would be most grateful and
laptop could be prevented from throwing itself through
the window with the CDs.
