If I have to reboot/reset and am unable to close down all programs, what
is the XP equivalent of the disk check and how do I set it up please to
run automatically on the reboot if windows didn't close properly?
(formerly on Win98SE)
Many thanks.

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the WinNT/2K
OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk," which performs
much better.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

Run Chkdsk from a command prompt. Click Start. All
programs>accessories>command prompt. At the command prompt type: chkdsk

if yuo need to know what options are available for chkdsk type: chkdsk.exe
/? at the command prompt. A list of chkdsk options will then be displayed.

Press the Windows and F1 keys together to open the Help and Support
Center.

Search on either of the terms you mentioned in your subject line.

Thank you gentlemen - that has helped me a little further up the
learning curve.
