getting rid of a Windows messenger systray reminder

R

Robert M Jones

Windows XP Home - my User account
My systray has an icon of two figures with a red cross on it - "Windows
Messenger - Not Signed In"

I have Messenger Service disabled according to XP help instructions.
I know the whole "messenger" terminology is a confusing dogs breakfast -
certainly got me confused!
Is it possible to get rid of this icon? The 3 right click options that
aren't greyed out are
Sign in As...
Open
Exit

(I would still want to be able to use my 3rd party program Winsent to
send a message within my intranet/home network. I also have Skype and a
usb VOIP phone)

Strangely this little beast is not visible in my Administrator account
systray.

Windows help is not all that communicative on Windows Messenger

Many thanks.

You've got a couple options here. One, disable the program startup entirely
using msconfig. Start > Run > msconfig & choose the StartUp tab. Located in
here you'll find the executable name for Windows Messenger. Uncheck that
choose OK & restart.

The other option, and the one I've chosen on my windows machines is to open
Add/Remove Programs & choose Add/Remove Windows Components fro the left menu.
Scroll down and uncheck Windows Messenger. Next yourself out and Windows will
uninstall Windows Messenger.

I can't see anything like Windows Messenger in Startup tab in my Admin
account and I can't access msconfig in my User account.
I don't want to uninstall it in case something else is relying on it.

The Startup item for Windows Messenger in msconfig is called msmsgs. Uncheck
that one and restart.

Also, you can run msconfig while logged in as your user account, you just
have to run msconfig as your admin account. Do a search for msconfig against
the C:\ drive. When you find the one that says msconfig.exe (make sure file
extensions are turned on) right click and choose Run as... from there enter
the username and password of the Admin account.

"msmsgs" is definitely not in the Startup tab when run either IN the
admin account or AS the admin account.

However it is running in Processes for my User account. So something is
starting it.

On further investigation - it arrives when I start MSOutlook but seems
to be left running when I exit MSOutlook but doesn't leave when I close
MSOutlook (2003).

In Outlook 2k3, do this:
Tools menu > Options > Other Tab
Under Person Names, unselect the Enable Person Names Smart Tag check box

M

mikeyhsd

simply turn off the options for run in background and start with windows. NO need to play around with MSCONFIG.

then exit it.
