Worried bout installing windows xp sp2

Could anyone please reassure me that windows xp sp2 will NOT damage my
computor. i installed sp2 last year and within less then a few weeks i had to
buy a new motherbored due to a number of problems resuting in a burnt chip,
im not saying it was due to sp2 but as you can see this is worrying me alot
about installing sp2 again seeing as sp1 will shortly be not updating. i also
had a number of problems when using sp2, have all bugs etc now been fixed and
will it run smoothly like sp1, if anyone could cast a smile, big thanks.

My computer has been running SP2 for over a year now, and there have been no
problems.

I did insure that the computer was ready for the upgrade before I started
though.

I certainly hope that you don't believe that any piece of software can burn
up a chip..

There is no possible way for SP2 to damage hardware.

It wasn't due to SP2. It couldn't possibly have been responsible for the
burnt chip.

seeing as sp1
will shortly be not updating. i also had a number of problems when

If you had problems with SP2, you may have been infected with spyware before
installing it. The great majority of problems that people have experienced
have been attributed to this.

Updating with SP2 wiped all data from both my HDDs!! Make sure you have
anything valuable backed up and separate from the PC at the time of
updating. It was an absolute pig for me to get SP2 trained, but since
doing so, has been fine!

You haven't written much about the present computer into
which SP2 is going to be installed. If it is suitable for
Windows XP and compatible, then there should be no issues
involving SP2. OTOH, standard precautions need to be taken,
including backing up vital data and information files. One
also needs to read up on applications that might need to be
turned off during the upgrade to SP2, especially third-party
firewalls such as ZoneAlarm. And also check for any post-SP2
issues involving other applications that are installed. IOW,
do the research first, protect oneself next, and then do the
upgrade.

If you know SP2 was not responsible for the hardware damage, which of
course it was not, then why are you worrying about it or even mentioning
it? No, I wouldn't be concerned with doing something that I know was
not responsible for the other problems I had. SP2 does have changes
from SP1 so you have to learn about those and make the necessary
accommodations. The underlying system on which SP2 is applied needs to
be running well. There can be no malware or other problems. Putting
any OS upgrade on a system that has problems will just propagate the
problem and probably make it worse, not cure it.

One option is to do a clean install of XP with an installation CD that
has SP2. If yours does not, SP2 can be integrated in the installation
CD by a process called slipstreaming. Then clean install programs and
restore data from a backup.

If you choose to apply SP2 to a running system make sure it is clean of
all malware and has no problems. Disable your AV, disconnect all
unneeded peripherals, and make sure you have a full and complete backup.
Make sure all the programs you need to run are compatible with SP2 or
have the needed patches to make it work with SP2 available from the
program's vendor. Make sure you have SP2 compatible drivers for all
your hardware.

Here are some informational links for slipstreaming and for installing
and working with SP2.

Easy for you to say. Not three days after I installed SP2, I got holes in
TWO pair of socks.

How could you "lose everything" due to a motherboard malfunction?

How could you lose ANYTHING due to a motherboard malfunction?

A few people have had *software* problems after installing SP2. If it
caused your hardware to fail, you are the first.
