Problems after installing windows xp sp2

I installed Windows XP SP2 recently ( had windows xp proffessional sp1
earlier and my laptop was working awesome ) But after installing Windows XP
sp2, my laptop became quite unstable ( its configuration is 512 mb ram, 40 gb
hd, 2.4 ghz ). Every time I close some folder ( any folder like My Documents
or My Programs ), I receive an Internet Explorer error like "Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed. We are sorry for
the inconvenience." This error also shows up, even if u just open any folder
and close it without doing anything much. It also says "Please tell Microsoft
about this problem" which I did many times but ultimately gave up.
My second problem is that, everytime i right click on any tray icon on the
System Tray, it gives me the tools u get when u right click on the taskbar
itself and not the tools for that program on which u right clicked. Its
annoying. My laptop is also running quite slower than its usual speed earlier
( even if i have done spyware scanning, virus scanning, adware scanning,
disk defragmentation, disk clean up ).
I was realy happy with Microsoft Windows Xp sp1 and now I cant switch back
to sp1 by system restore, coz i downloaded many softwares and files after
installing windows sp2, and i dont want to lose those softwares by restoring
to an earlier restoration point...
Its realy depressing and any help regarding those problems will be very
much appriciated. Atleast with so much problems with sp2, I wont be
suggesting any of my friends the windows xp proffessional sp2, unless
Microsoft helps me and solves my problems.
Thanks.

Control Panel: Remove Software: Remove SP2.

Check with laptop manufacturer before installing SP2.

Hi,

I have SP2 on my Dell Latitude C640 and have had no
problems with it. All my programs, games, etc runs well,
no errors and slow downs. I have seem some preformance
increase since the install.

Some of the problems I have read from other posts, could
be from previously removed spyware causing some system
file damage prior to installing SP2. Also some have had a
corrupted download of SP2 to cause some of the problems.

How did you install SP2? From Windows Updates?
Downloading the full SP2 install? From SP2 update CD?
Before thinking its SP2, you might consider what source
you used for the install.

I installed my SP2 from the full install I downloaded from
MS, I have had heard problems from those that just allowed
the automatic update to do the install. Also did you
follow all the pre-install steps prior to installing SP2?
Most problems occur from not properly preparing your
system.

Besides my laptop, also installed it on my desktop and 128
work computers and none of them are having any problems.

Hi Jeff,
I installed it from windows update and I followed each and every
instruction it said. I did a spyware scan by adware + spybot and webroot
spyware to make sure that theres no spywares in my laptop...
Hmm...Anyways.. dont know what to do. Am waiting for another windows update
incase theres some bug in new Internet explorer or windows xp sp2.
THanks.

Hi there,

Up until yesterday I had excactly the same problem on my latitude D505.
What really messes up an SP2 installation is when the BIOS is an
"older" version. Mine was D505 A02. As you said; a perfectly working
laptop before installation and afterwards a complete dog. The old bios
somehow messes the installation up completely. Upgrading the bios
afterwards did not solve the problem.

My solution was:

- Upgrade the bios to the newest version
- Clear the drive
- Install XP from scratch
- Add all patches from Windows update
- Download and install newest drivers for everything (especially the -
bluetooth driver is important).
- Install SP2 once more

According to Dell this could be done by rolling back the SP2 upgrade
and then reinstalling it. I just felt the complete reinstall was safer.

My conclusion is: Installing SP2 on a laptop is only recomended if you
check the SP2 notes from Microsoft and the hardware manufacturer.

Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the process indicated by MS.

Hmmm...

By letting users download and install it virtually automatically via
windows update like any other security patch, I mistakenly got the
impression, that it was a walk in the park. Stupid me!
Thanks for putting me straight there ;-)
