Wipe and reload from SP1 OEM to SP2 OEM - Same Product key?

Daryl

I have already tried installing the updgrade from SP1 to SP2. That
caused numerous lockups I was not willing to live with, so I
uninstalled it. My current installation is XP Home SP1 OEM. I have a
XP Home SP2 OEM CD and want to try formatting my hard drive and
installing SP2 from scratch. I have done a couple of installs from SP2
OEM CD's and have not experienced anywhere near the issues encounter
when upgrading. What I want to know is, when I install SP2 to my newly
formatted hard drive, will I be able to use the legal SP1 Product key
from the sticker on my PC? (I don't want to use the Product key from
the SP2 CD and shouldn't have to as I have already paid for XP Home in
perpetuity. I will be installing SP2 on another CD and using the key
from the SP2 CD there.)

Anyone had experience with this yet?

Hi,

It should work, but my concern would be whether or not the other disk has
the proper driver support for your system. If it was preinstalled, the
drivers required for some of the hardware may only exist on the supplied CD.
If these are both generic OEM disks, then what you propose should work.

The product key code is for where the operating system is, SP1 and SP2 have
no key codes, I have never seen one, they are upgrades to WinXP, the only
keycode called for is WIN XP, orginal cd , the key code is on the outside
wrapper fro OEM's
There are several items to consider when reinstalling windows XP, the first
is How to do a clean install?, the second is activation( which simply means,
the win xp is married to the computer its installed in first), "Microsoft
does not grant divorces"(one exception may be if the mobo goes out and you
get a factory new one under warranty) you as the end user, OEM builders-
sellors from what I have read are not so fortunate- they have to
relicense-see this in OEM builders section, Microsoft comments. Fortunately
us home builders and user's keep Micrsoft OEM software on our shopping
list's, so we are in a different boat, so far, in that we are not building
and selling them, we are building them and using them for our personal use
and that I close this communication, SPAM , will not be answered.

OK, thanks for the input. I have taken a closer look at my sticker and
it's NOT an OEM sticker, but an HP sticker. So, I don't think I will
chance it. I wouldn't want have a clean hard drive and be half way
through the install to find out my key is not accepted. I might give
MS a phone call just to ask though....

Cheers,
Daryl

MS does not help with HP OEM versions of XP. You have to contact HP
directly.

BTW: If SP1/SP2 will not install onto your XP, your XP installation CD
product key is part of MS list of banned CD keys. The only way to solve
this is to get a correct replacement key from HP (not sure about MS for OEM
versions).

"OEM" stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer." An OEM is a
company who builds systems and sells them to you along with
Windows.

So in this case, your OEM is HP, and your HP sticker is an OEM
sticker.

I have a copy of XP Home edition which I use on customers pc's to do
reinstalls and 99% of the time their SP-1 key will work on installation but
can not use a slipstream SP-2 CD and then use their CD key on the side of
the case which is a pain as I have to upgrade to SP-2 after a SP-1
installation
