I went to the website and saved the file. However, when I open the "file"..
compact database, repair database and clear outbox cannot be clicked on. I
am at a loss for how to get this email out of my outbox...

You could try following the instructions on the web site instead of just
clicking download and diving in blindly.

They have been written in extra large text and highlighted in red box
specifically for people like you... but as I've mentioned before, it seems
that text can't be big enough nor the box red enough
for careless people.

I'll save you the hassle of spending a couple of nano seconds on the web...

"If Windows Mail is open, or if a current WinMail.exe process is running,
the Database functions are disabled, and the WinMail.exe process must be
terminated before these features can become available. (If WinMail is closed
and these buttons still remain disabled, then perform a CTRL-SHIFT-ESC, and
under Processes find WinMail.exe and click on it, and then click the End
Process button.)"

Close Windows Mail, close WMUtil. Right click on the Taskbar, select Task
Manager, Processes tab, press "Show processes from all users" button, highlight
WinMail.exe, and press End Process button.

Open WMUtil and try again.

Please help, I can not send or delete e-mail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The body of the e-mail displays:
Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again.

I am experiencing the same problem. Is there anywhere I can get some phone
support with this problem or possibly someone who would be willing to walk me
through this nightmare. I am trying what has been suggested, but I am
aparently going wrong somewhere. I am not a very good tech guy...

Quite frankly I'm appalled that having just purchased a PC with a Windows
Vista Operating System it's got a ready made built in error whereby emails
cannot be deleted. If it was a new car and the indicator system failed to
re-set the manufacturers warranty would have ensured that all the cars were
re-called for a repair at no cost to the owner. I can see that there are
evidently a number of bright IT chaps on this site trying to work around the
problem but are there any manufacturers lurking amongst us? I wish I could
turn back the clock, save myself a lot of money in the process and carry on
using Windows 98 because this Vista Mail sucks.

Then try something else.
I'm using Thunderbird, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail.... all work fine
for me. And all FREE.

Also using Outlook 2003, but just for the calendar.

If you poured sand into your new car's engine oil, do you think
the manufacturer would honor the warranty?
That's essentially what you are doing when using a non-compatible
antivirus program with Windows Mail.

This issue is a very common occurrence with Windows Mail.
A successful fix has been developed by Steve Cochran:

Go to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
Be sure to read the Program Operation notes! When you start to
download the file, be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After wmutil.zip finishes downloading, choose Run, then Extract. Then it
will show the extraction folder with two files in it, WMUtil.exe and scxout.dll.
Run WMUtil.exe, wait until the buttons become active, then click on
Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

Simply scan this forum for responses to similar questions and you
will find:

Use this Microsoft fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

Although Outbox is the only folder mentioned, it will remove stuck
messages from all folders.
