Windows Defender error 0x80004003 Invalid pointer

I started having this error quite suddenly. If my Windows Defender shows me a
message that my computer has not been scanned for a few days (because it was
switched off), there is a button for "Start Scan" right beside the message.
When I click on this button, I get the error "Invalid pointer".

Does someone know what this means and how I can get rid of it? Thanks in
advance.

Please post in one of the newsgroups specifically set up for the beta
(software that isn't finished and is still in the bug-checking phase)
Windows Defender program.

What steps have you taken to resolve this issue so far? Are you running
windows XP? If so, does it have all the availible windows updates?
