Error message 0x80004003

I get the error message when I attempt to run a scan:

Windows Defender has encountered an error 0x80004003. Invalid Pointer.

What is it and can I fix it?

Hello Jane,
This is a well documented issue which has been posted across, in particular,
the Announcement and General Discussion newsgroups. There has also been some
input from the MSFT guys regarding the issue. Using the search function type:
`Invalid Pointer` and you will see what I mean.
