| I expect if you ask ten people you will get at least 15 different views.
| I've seen several other consultants advise to wait for at least SP1 - I
| concur.

I'd wait until Blu-Ray drives are $50 and they don't get their approved
drivers revoked by Vista.

Better yet, use an operating system that can't revoke your drivers!

I noticed in those pics that "large icons" are turned on. Turn off large
icons and the menu will be smaller. Turning off large icons doesn't change
the size of the text but will make the menu smaller overall...

The people that praise Vista and say that they have no problems can't really
be soak testing it very well or are most probably morons. There are lots of
problems with the unbolt apps at this stage, and even things as simple as
moving or deleting files takes much longer than with XP, and I have powerful
hardware here.

There is no real reason to bother upgrading an XP machine. Just get it with
a new computer, or wait till SPA sorts out (most of) the bugs.

Guess you aren't very good at your operating system of choice or you would
be spending your time helping out others who use the same.

Instead you waste your time here!

I need a new computer ASAP, but I'm trying to gauge how successful the Vista
launch is before I decide whether I want XP or Vista, and what versions of each.
From what I can see, Vista is a failure for what I intended (burning 8 hour
videotapes to Blu-Ray), but that could change in a couple of years. But also
what hardware I'd need to be Vista compatible without getting Vista preloaded
(even the preloaded systems don't have all of the drivers!). So, if I pick an
E6600 chip and a MOBO with 3 PCI slots in it and 2 PCIe slots for video and USB
& Firewire (really hard to find firewire included on mobos); then I have to
figure out what video & capture cards I need & soundcard I need special ordered
(M-Audio most likely); how many hard drives I need; and the power supply needed
(what a touchy subject!). I replace all of my lightbulbs to low wattage units to
save on electricity and these new computer power supplies are gonna overload my
BackUPS during a blackout!

What is the best way to set up Virtual machines, still seing new answers as of
today here, horribly unimpressive.

Nice try at an insult there. =)

See the thing is though, it is hard helping people with an operating system
where things just simply work. =)

I actually do post to the Beryl forums occasionally with helpful stuff
seeing how I am using the latest beta version.

I also do post to a linux newsgroup and answer newbie questions as they
arise..

As far as wasting time here? Naw, I consider this newsgroup to be a pretty
decent entertainment value and therefore it's not a waste of time.

Plus I've had the occasional interesting discussion in here with a couple of
people and I'm always open for more interesting discussions.

And hey! If you can explain to me, just for starters:

- How Vista not supporting over half my systems and older peripherals...
- How Vista not supporting some software I need (note that I have viable
linux alternatives hence the problem does not apply to linux)...
- How frequent activation phonecalls because I just updated my drivers
again...
- How never knowing if maybe my drivers were revoked today because a 15yr
old found a way to hack them and copy a blue ray dvd and news of it are
plastered all over the net with a detailed how-to...

How any of those things are beneficial to me and make me more productive...

Well then maybe I may even give Vista a try!!! =)

There is only one way to setup virtual machines. You load the operating
system as if you are installing it on a new box. You ARE creating a new
computer, albeit a virtual computer. Validation, and all that goes with it,
applies.

No other way that I know of.

For the comic relief, mainly. I don't spend much time here - this is the
only MS group I monitor; about 15 Linux groups; and yes, I do help there.

Actually I have almost 10 computers all running XP...but since only one of
them is capable of running Vista (per system requirements)...None will ever
see it. =)

- How Vista not supporting over half my systems and older peripherals...

I doubt that. As well, there is plenty linux doesn't support.
- How Vista not supporting some software I need (note that I have viable

Good for you. The entire world doesn't have "viable linux alternatives".
It sound like you are not in the position to use a NEW OS. Nothing wrong
with that.
- How frequent activation phonecalls because I just updated my drivers
again...

What? That makes no sense.
- How never knowing if maybe my drivers were revoked today because a 15yr

plastered all over the net with a detailed how-to...

What? That makes no sense.

Again, It sound like you are not in the position to use a NEW OS. Nothing
wrong with that. As well, that has nothing to do with anyone else.

There are more alternatives than you think. Just need to open your eyes a
little. Mine were shut too for the longest time.

At this point in time, the only thing I don't have are a few games. Would be
a big deal to hardcore gamers understandably. Not a big deal to me. That's
about the only software problem I see.
What? That makes no sense.

See another thread in this very NG where a user updated his nVidia driver
and got 3 days to re-activate Windows...=)
What? That makes no sense.

Sure it does! You do know about the driver revocation thing in Vista right?
In case any drivers leak DRM content?? =)
Again, It sound like you are not in the position to use a NEW OS. Nothing

Nope, I am in a position to use an efficient, working and stable OS. =)

And actually, ya know what?

The original reason why I came to this NG was to educate myself on Vista
prior to buying it. I *wanted* Vista. I've been a big MS supporter for many
years. I liked every OS release so far and enjoyed using them. But I
suppose all good things do come to an end...and for me, they came to an end
with Vista.

I fail to see your point? My PPC will never see Vista either. But then
again, anything out of hardware spec has absolutely nothing to do with
Vista.

Vista is a pile of dog doo doo.....

Oh, OK. So that means I could light a copy of it on fire and leave it
on Bill Gate's doorstep! ;)
the only interesting thing its got is the 3d desktop... but there are no
applications yet
that take advantage of that. On the otherhand with vista you open yourself
to
a huge list of problems... and if you join that with bad design concepts...

Vista is a flop.... get it only if you are buying a new computer with some
OS preinstalled..
and the pc you are getting is a dual core with at least 2 gigs of ram.

And also if you don't want to maintain control over your own
computer...or if you want to leave Bill a gift :D
