im not sure about your errors but you could try this

reinstall the application that came with the sound card, but this time get
it from their website. this way the drivers will be compatible with xp and
they will be up to date.

you could also go to device manager and see if anythings wrong/missing.
(rightclick my computer / properties / hardware tab / device manager /)

you could also to to system information from "all
programs/accessories/system tools/" and from the tools menu click directx
diag tool.

Also..from another posting:

"I was having the same problem and was looking online for a solution.
The advice from this web site seems to work for some reason after a lot
of attempts failed...

http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/archive/topic/16516-1.html

Since it worked for me, the instructions should go on to say, "Go into
'options'-'properties' and click the radio buttons for both 'playback'
and 'recording'. Make sure that all of the boxes that appear below are
checked. Then you should see a bunch more sliders than before. Make sure
they are all NOT muted and are at a decent (max?) level. All of the
sudden, I could hear my mic again when I raised the Microphone slider. "

Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows
XP CD to the system_root \System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To
do this, follow these steps:

Start/Run/CMD. In the command prompt window type:

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command:
expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the
Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly.
Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery
CD".
