Having problems with no sound when I use the microphone. When I do the test
for sound hardware (creative souundblaster PCI) I get the message "Error
occurred during DirectPlay voice setup. Error code 0x80004005" after which I
get the message "windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use add/remove program
from control panel to install". I cannot find that program in the list.
There are no problems with the speakers as they play music fine.
Help please- all my voice chat is put on hold now!

This problem occurs because when you change the Audio Hardware
Acceleration setting to None this removes the hardware-accelerated
device from the list of
possible devices. However, DSound continues to try and map to the
device.
RESOLUTION
===========
This problem generally occurs only the first time that you run the
test. If this problem continues to occur after the first attempt,
follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click "Sounds and Audio Devices".
2. On the Voice tab, under Voice Playback, click Advanced.
3. On the Performance tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider at
least one position to the right.

TO THE OP:

Don't do the following part of Taimur Mughal's post! More than likely
it is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!

Post back to the group if you have any further problems after enabling
the Hardware Acceleration, BEFORE trying to do a repair install.
Also maybe file is missing and needs to recover with the following
steps.
Please try to repair Windows XP using the following steps:

Changing the audio hardware did not help. I tried rebooting with the XP CD
ROM in place and even changed the BIOS setup so CDROM is the primary boot
device but those instructions mentioned (setup, repair etc) never came up.
What should I do

Ignore it for now. It still isn't time to do a repair install.

First go to the creative web site and download the latest drivers for
your sound card.
http://au.creative.com/support/downloads/

and follow any insstruction given and its installation.

Also, I would check to make sure that you have your micro phone plugged
into the right jack, and that your microphone actually works.

Ask a friend if you can check it in their computer, and askif you can
borrow their mike to check on your computer.

If you are still having problems post back.

Hi Kurt,
Thank you! Tried downloading from Creative- with autoupdate it says it does
not detect any creative product on my computer. With manual update by
selecting Soundblaster PCI 64 I get a mesage :Sound card could not be
detected. In control panel my sound device is shown as
CreativeAudioPCI(ES1371, ES1373)(WDM) and I tried updating my driver using
the original XP CD. No luck!

Hi Kurt,
I tried reading those links but could not understand most of it! Somehow
managed
to downlaod an update from Creative for Soundblaster 128 and it installed OK.
Strangely the soundblaster icon may or may not show up in my taskbar.
If it does the mute box of microphone volume is always ticked by default and
I have to uncheck it to start having a voice chat!
If there is no icon obviously no voice chat is possible -I then reboot!
Can anyone explain this?
