[PL] PL2005 CD - it's time to get serious

Huh? In total isn't it the *same* rediculously large download. Maybe
even a tiny bit bigger than a single file. . .

Let us assume a 700MB file. Rarred and posted to abf in 100MB chunks
over seven days in yEnc format. Some coding overhead - I will guess at
30MB. Day eight for a few par files...
No, I don't want to pay

High download costs are one of the reasons we are creating a CD. The
comparison is postage cost vs. download cost. For many people on dial-up
the download cost would *far* exceed the cost of postage for a CD that
is burned and mailed to them.

My dialup package is unmetered with no restrictions. I can leave it on
for as long as I want downloading from binary usenet at a rate of around
20MB an hour
Did you get it that time? The point is I

Okay, I gather the idea is that *you* want to download the entire ISO in
"chunks" using a dial-up connection .

Do many other people want to do this?

I would think there would be a few binary usenetters about who would go
for it if offered. Dial up or broadband.

I hae me doubts. . .

Should that not be 'doots'?

I agree. If you upload the ISO I'm sure others will download it.

but. . .

There won't be a PL2005 CD until a volunteer to *create* it comes
forward . . .

There won't be anything to *upload* to abf *until* the files are
downloaded, compiled and the CD is created and uploaded, mailed or
whatever - so that you can obtain a copy.

ATM we're talking about pie in the sky. . .

Ah. I can see how not having an iso for me to download and post to a
binary group could be considered to be a bit of a drawback to my
argument.

I was focussing on what I could do, rather on what is needed. :)

you grasp the idea here.

Hmmm. That's a funny way to ask someone to do you a favour.

I was being sociable until some jerkwater decided to spit shit. My original
question was if the ISO is going to be posted in a split file format. I
don't think that was too far off topic. WTF does it matter why I asked?

25-35 people downloaded "chunks" of the PL2004 ISO every day from your
server?

When I had it running. You find that surprising? They were pretty pleased
that they could ftp a handful of files at a time. On average there were
between 25 and 35 different people per day downloading. Some days were
heavier traffic, a very few were lighter. I pulled the server offline after
so many attempts from people to try to upload files and create
subdirectories. There were certain people here who didn't like the idea of
me posting an expanded version of the ISO. I don't have access to broadband
where I'm living now. The best I can get here is a dial-up so I won't be
posting the files for download this year.

Yeah... the ftp server he runs from dial-up. Idjit spotted and flagged.

I don't know what your problem is...probably had your head up your ass so
long your ears are full of shit. I ran the ftp server when I had cable
modem. I have dial-up now...I don't run the ftp server now. It's really
quite simple.

Yup. ;) Many people have volunteered for PL2005 CD tasks - they have
nothing to do ATM. . .

*IF* someone volunteers as download coordinator/CD compiler the project
can move forward.

Downloading a handful of files gives the downloader something that's
usable at once. ISTM you're comparing apples and oranges. Downloading an
ISO in chunks is different - the downloader has to obtain *all* the
chunks and combine them. If the download can be resumed isn't it easier
to download an ISO as one file? What advantages do "chunks" have? What
am I missing?

*First* we need a volunteer compiler - then we *may* need additional
downloaders.

On second thought. . .

Who is willing to download the programs on one or more PL2005 web pages?
Many hands make light work. Downloading a web page or two does not
require a big time commitment if you have a hig-speed connection.
Volunteer Downloader tasks:

1. create the PL2005 CD file directories using Path Creator and the .bat
file that's here: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/2005PL-batch.bat
(that's a 5 minute job)

2. download files and place them in the appropriate directory (directory
name = app name). Note updates/changes from file information on the PL
web pages.

3. Burn files and mail to the PL2005 CD compiler.

4. Post revisions that are needed on the PL web pages.

FYI - last year three volunteers with high speed connections did the
downloading. IIRC they completed all the downloads in one night.

Note: your location is not a primary consideration. The CDs I mailed to
Thailand, the UK, New Zealand etc. etc. arrived quickly (and the cost of
mailing was low).

Would anyone like to volunteer as a downloader?

Just give me a due date, and I'll get to grabbing...

Thank you. :) Due date - ASAP. ;) We're trying to hit a moving target.
Some updates *will* be needed - that's a given. Waiting a few days to
get started won't change that - ISTM you might as well get going now.

Please name the web page(s) you plan to do - to avoid duplication of
effort. (We can use the wiki to track that info.)

If in doubt download the program's files. Last year almost all the
programs were downloaded - grab them all this year too if it's easier to
work that way. Files can easily be omitted from the final CD if we
haven't obtained permission to distribute them.

I updated the PL2005 web pages a couple of days ago - most of the
version info should be current. *Please* make notes when you find
additional program updates so I can update the web pages to show the
revised files names, sizes, version etc. etc.

Directions for creating the program directories follow. I created the
directory structure with this app:

Program: Path Creator
Author: Granite Mountain Software
Install: n.i. (no install)
Ware: (Freeware)
http://gms.cyberrock.net/products.php

http://gms.cyberrock.net/DownloadCenter/?PathCreator
PathCreator201.zip (289 KB)

OS: Windows 9x/2k/XP (per an acf post)

There's a .bat file here (directory names/paths are in the .bat file):

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/batch.bat

If you:
1. download PathCreator201.zip and unzip it
2. copy the batch.bat file into the directory
3. run PathCreator.exe

The directory structure for the file downloads will be created for you.

Questions?

Tell me which pages to do and I'll do them for you ) (I'm not online very
much but can set my FF2004 program to download them when I'm not here).

Thank you Steven. :) I arbitrarily put you down for WEB DESIGN. Feel
free to pick a different page if you like - so far none of the others
have been claimed. See:

http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?PricelesswareCd

Just revise the wiki if you prefer to do a different page.

I added a page with the info about creating the PL2005 file directory:

http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?DownloadingInfo

I'm sure no one wants me to post that info over and over again. . . :)

I will probably get the iso when it is available, and I am on the
broadband puter.
It would then be easy enough to up it to abf over, eg, a week.

I tend to agree with Susan on this. I would think that a lot of dial
up people don't have access to binary newsgroups. Even those
who do could well end up with missing posts. A web page would
be a much better distribution method even for dialup people.

It would seem like a lot of work for you to both upload the original
posts and answer the expected (I am missing part 27, 43, 111 etc)
queries.

Your choice however. :)
