[PL] 2004 VOTE DISCUSSION: INTERNET

My Name

I have no need of an FTP server, but I'm surprised to see
that Filezilla rdidn't make it. The client is outstanding,
does no acf regular use Filezilla's server?

I'm very sad to report that on 2 NSPs I am seeing replies to
Susans posts, but not Susans original posts. I don't know why.

To the point, an FTP server that wasn't mentioned that those who
are looking for an FTP server may want to check out.

Hamster hijacks portions of your data. Once you've entered
passwords into the configs for accounts that you set up, you can't
retrieve them. Unless you keep a second set of data records
seperate and apart from Hamster, you're screwed.

A feature, not a problem. A program that uses passwords to
grant/deny access but will tell the user what the passwords are upon
request might as well not use passwords at all.

IIRC, your trouble came when you tried to migrate an existing
installation of Hamster to a new machine but the passwords had been
encrypted using machine-specific info. Hamster currently has the
option to use machine-specific info in its encryption algorithm or
not.
Also, was there some reason TYPSoft wasn't included as an FTP
server or Hermes included as an email server?

I don't know what the reasons were, but no one nominated either of
them. Maybe next year.

Bookmark Wizard does only one thing. Processes your favorites folder,
and makes it into a customized html file. As to your .url files, your
only option is to choose to ignore some folders in that set directory.
Btw, Bookmark Wizard won't go anywhere else on your drive; it
restricts to the location of your favorites folder.

None of the above is criticism. We appreciate straightforward, direct-
purpose tools. But the issue is that it's area of functionality is
very tiny, making it odd for it to cancel out, by one vote, another
tool which is multiplex by compare.

I agree with your analysis Karen. I'd also add another point of
confusion....I was actually talking about "URLs", not ".url files". As a
Mozilla and Netscape user, it took me awhile to learn what ".URL files"
were. That's because the extension on Mozilla/Netscape URL shortcuts are
not visible in Windows...at least not Windows 98. At any rate, when I think
of URLs, I think of the strings you type into your browser that start with
"http://" and I thought the category in question..."URL: Convert to HTML"
was designed to convert lists of URLs into HTML.

In either case, I agree with your analysis. I just wanted to point out
another issue.

There is a good reason to have two newsreaders, one offline and one
online. I'd put the top three on the list, with Gravity/Super
Gravity having only one entry.

Agree with Gravity only having one entry, pointing to the download page
here:

http://gravity.tbates.org/start1.html#download

That describes both versions. The 2.5 version is the last closed source
freeware, the latest version is/willbe open source.

21 votes for Filezilla! 5 votes for CesarFTP and 5 for Quick'n Easy

Do we have enough people using FTP servers to make a decision on merit?
When someone asks: "What is the best FTP server", will the answer be
freeware, or will there be silence in a.c.f? Ofcourse, free makes a
program look real good.

I disagree. If there are so few people in a.c.f to vote for them as
Pricelessware, they should not be on the PL.

The nominations page will still be available, so these apps will still
be on the pricelessware.org website. Perhaps an empty category for
FTP servers, with an explanation that no FTP servers made the list
along with a link to the nominations/voting page?

We vote for programs, not categories. If programs fail to get enough support
from the members of the group, then the programs should not be included. The
categories are only used to list the programs and make it easier to find
them.

There are a categories in GRAPHICS which will disappear in the next PL
because the programs in them did not get enough support (Morphing Editor for
one). As Q points out, the nomination list is still available. I don't think
it's necessary to include empty categories with an explanation as to why
there are no programs in it.

I see 21 next to Filezilla _Client_ but don't see any mention of
Filezilla _Server_.

Sorry... I thought they were one and the same... I don't use either...
should have lurked... but I still think this needs to be discussed.

I think Mailwasher should be disqualified. It's crippleware. Keep
Popcorn and Pop Peeper.

Please read the descriptions *before* commenting . . . :)

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004INTERNET.htm#EmailChecker

The Mailwasher *and* Popcorn nominations are quite specific in regard to
the version being nominated.

I don't expect the server to offer up passwords to the users...that would be
rediculous. I'm talking about the person maintaining the server. For me,
maintaining the accounts in a privately operated news server was a problem
if I could not move the accounts to a different server program. So, for me
this was a problem of hijacked data, not a "feature". In my definition, a
"feature" should be a desireable option.

Incorrect. My problem was porting the accounts from Hamster to a different
news server program so that I could remove Hamster from my computer.

FTP servers are very different to clients, and thereby comparing both is
a big mistake.

CopyURL. A menu entry in explorer, to make it fewer clicks to read an the
link information from an .url file. Skips using property dialog box, or
notepad. Significant: it's really not something you'd use online. To me,
it's just an explorer addon.

Bookmark Wizard. Yes, just a straight favs to (customized) bookmark.htm
convertor. No other functions either.

Visit URL. All kinds of import options, including clipboard. All kinds of
export options, too. Not just html, but text, csv (or other delim), plus
to .urls. Additional. It has an editor window interface, and you often
like to run it alongside your browser, clicking in it to launch URLs.

So. Proposition 1: the second two are not really competing against the first
one. Proposition 2: the superset of functionality of Visit URL over Bookmark
Wizard is so great, that we ought to consider before tossing it aside on the
basis of the difference of a single vote.

Three very different programs here ,Visit Url
should definitely stay on list

Please review the capabilities of all the programs on this list before
posting an objection to the exclusion of a program. The list is
separated into subcategories to make it easier to read. Many
subcategories overlap to a greater or lesser degree.

Many of you have greater knowledge of the programs on this page than I
do. Comments are welcome.

Optimoz (Browser Tool) 4 (out)

Amphetadesk is a rss news gatherer not a browsertool .It
uses a browser to show it's results only. It has nothing at all to do
with the rest of the list that I can see. Wrong section perhaps? As to
that Weather Watcher isn't a browser tool either. It is a stand alone
wether program

PopTray (Email Checker) 11 (out)
Magic Mail Monitor (Email Checker) 10 (out)
nPOP (Email Checker) 6 (out)

A point about YahooPOPs:
It does not do the same thing as the others: POPpeeper & other email checkers
allow us to see the mails in the account. YahooPOPs only converts the protocol
webmail->POP3, so that your normal (POP) mail client can retrieve your mails
from yahoo without having to pay.

It is not an email checker, and I'd recommend to keep it because of the separate
capability/usefulness.

ROFOLOL!

Outlook Express coming out ahead in a popular vote, who would have thought this
when hearing the ferociously vocal MS-bashing minority.

I wonder how they are going to make this fit with their set vision of the world:
in a popular vote where money and MS clout had no say, users actually liked the
MS product better. Imagine that.

AGO Agent Group Order (Newsreader Tool) 7 (out)

Should it really be out if it is the only one in its category?

Especially when it happens to be an add-in for Forte Agent which makes the list
this year?

I'd recommend to keep it.

Given that the subcategory appears to have been email/news clients, the
result is not at all surprising. Were a poll to be taken, I think it
highly likely that most who shun OE also choose to use dedicated news
clients and dedicated mail clients, rather than the all-in-one
approach of this category. Were you even remotely interested in
objectivity, you would not have overlooked the skewing effect of the fact
that OE comes with every M$ installation, and is free. Were OE _not_
installed automatically, it would be interesting to see how it would
fare garnering votes against the others.

Also, since this is acF, and many non-M$ alternatives in Windows are
not free, notably Agent for news and The Bat! for mail, the number of
qualifying competitors for this particular category was rather small
to begin with. Given all that, if you still feel the need to crow
about OE's victory, by all means go ahead.
