Both the links to the Planet Mirror (UK) and the BTN mirror (USA)
downloads from there seem to work.

Hi Sietse,

Yes, there are still download links available and it is freeware. I'm
concerned that the links may simply be leftover from the days when the
program was owned by JerMar.

It is *not* clear (to me at least) whether *distribution* of the last
freeware version is allowed. If someone has the EULA perhaps they could
answer that question.

WARNING: The Desktop Architect home page is gone. The Desktop Architect
URL (http://www.desktoparchitect.com/) found within the Desktop
Architect program points to unrelated web pages that may have unsafe or
objectionable content.

In the past the Desktop Architect URL evidently has led to porn and
spyware - there is no way to predict where may lead in the future.

Since I don't know how others feel about allowing a program with this
kind of problem on the Pricelessware list I am adding Desktop Architect
to the PL2004 acceptable/unacceptable ballot.

Susan,
Personally I'd deem it unacceptable, specifically because of that

I see. I installed it now. Green light w.r.t. distribution:

From the EULA (during install) and from the Help file :

Thanks Sietse,

That's good news. :)

I'm trying to track down a last available version of AIRoboform - that
looks less hopeful - they all seem to have disappeared.

I believe the last uncrippled freeware version is 5.0.8 and I haven't
found anything that looks like that (file size is 1085 KB) (aka 1 110
465 bytes). Found these links to what appear to be earlier versions:

9. 1.0M
ftp.freeware.ru/win/internet/browser/AiRoboForm.exe
10. 1.0M
ftp://ftp.ware.ru/win/internet/browser/AiRoboForm.exe

11. 912.1K ftp.ada.ru/Users/Alexandr/Soft/AiRoboForm v5.01/AiRoboForm.exe
12. 912.1K ftp.aist.net.ru/Users/Alexandr/Soft/AiRoboForm
v5.01/AiRoboForm.exe

Haven't suceeded in downloading anything yet - don't know if it will be
a legal distribution if I do. . .

Would someone like to check these versions? Better yet, does anyone know
of a link to version 5.0.8 - and/ or know whether it is legal to
distribute it?

I guess that linking to this tucows download cannot be anything but legal.

Note: I never used RoboForm and know nothing about the various versions.
I only know from the cumulative PL list that it has been Pricelessware.
I *seem* to remember that there has always been some issue with it.

I installed and noted (FWIF) that apparently daily checking for AutoUpdate
is obligatory and that then (optionally fake or empty) registration data are
sent :

<quote>

REGISTRATION DATA.
When you run AI RoboForm for the first time, it will show
Registration Dialogue that requests name, e-mail address.
The name and e-mail address that you enter into
Registration Dialogue is sent to Siber Systems server.

REGISTRATION DATA IS EDITABLE.
Note that registration name and e-mail address can be
different from names and e-mail addresses used in Identities.
Specifically, registration data can be fake or empty.
To edit Registration Data, open "Options. Other" and
click "Registration Info" button.

AUTO UPDATE.
AI RoboForm checks Siber Systems web site www.siber.com
for its new version approximately once a day.
If it finds a version that is newer than the version
that you have, AI RoboForm will offer you to upgrade.
Registration data is sent when checking for AutoUpdate.

I agree - IMO linking to a download page is often preferable for other
reasons as well - more links, other versions, additional information,
etc. etc.

The file information is still needed though - version, release date,
file size, file name. Many people want this info when they are reading
the descriptions.

and . . . when a program becomes unavailable at the link we have shown
having the *file name* makes it easier to search for alternate download
locations.

The current description of Kerio Personal Firewall version 2.1.5 on the
PL site is good. My info with yours:
Kerio Personal Firewall (freeware) OS: Win98/ME/NT/2000/XP
(English)
http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/PL2003SECURITY.htm#K106

Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) is a software agent that builds a barrier
between your personal computer and the Internet. KPF is designed to
protect your PC against attacks from both the Internet, and other
computers in the local network. KPF controls all data flow in both
directions from the Internet to your computer and vice versa, and it
can block all attempted communication allowing only what you choose to
permit. This makes KPF an ideal solution for notebook computers that
freely travel in and out of the corporate network, facing exposure to
various risks as they connect from different locations. Kerio Personal
Firewall protects against information theft, modification or
destruction, Trojan horse applications, spyware, unauthorized access
from within the local network, denial of service attacks to
applications or services.

[copied from another thread]
I downloaded ePrompter from http://www.epdownload.com/cnet/epsetup.exe
and during the installation I _actually_ read the EULA.
Included was:
7. Privacy Policy. ePrompter will periodically connect to each user's
computer so that we can track the number of active users, transfer
automatic software updates, replace advertising, and send messages
through the communications button. But that's all. We are totally
committed to maintaining your privacy. We do not ask for or collect
personal information. The identity information you provide when
downloading and registering is encrypted and stored only on your own
computer and will never be shared with anyone.
[end quote]

Since eprompter is listed at
http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/PL2003INTERNET.htm#eMailManager
is there something else I should be aware of?........different download
site? ........typo?

Instead of resorting to an older version of MailWasher (my current eMail
Manager) , any recommendations for:
- win98 (and w2k preferred)
- access to multiple email accounts
- delete from server

Hi tomZ,

Thanks for bringing this up.

The Cnet download page says <q> ePrompter 2.0 The latest version (SR16)
includes updates for Netscape, Juno, and Mail.com. Also, ePrompter has
removed ads and is once again freeware. </q>

However, I do *not* find the same statement on the ePromper site today.
I don't see any reference to registration requirements nor have I heard
registration requirements mentioned in ACF posts.

Did you complete the installation? If so, what registration information
did they ask for? Have you seen any ads?

I'm going to repost this post in the [PL] 2004 General Discussion
thread and put ePromper on the acceptable/unacceptable ballots - at
least until we learn more.

I use ePrompter v2 and during installation I saw the same or a similar
EULA and was alarmed at the time. But after hearing on acf that the EULA
was obsolete, I went ahead and installed the program.

I don't get ads, and I've never had to register anything. I haven't used
a packet checker to search for unwanted connections, but I haven't
noticed anything strange in Netstat.

I remain concerned however, that they didn't bother to change the EULA.
Even assuming the program is above-board, the fact that they were too
lazy to change the EULA still bothers me.

That said, I use the program because it works great, it doesn't appear to
be spyware (based on the above), and I haven't found anything worthwhile
to replace it.

I wonder if they have *removed* the ad-serving capability? With the EULA
unchanged it sounds to me as if they could start serving ads any time
they want to. I *hate* unpleasant surprizes . . . :(

I'm leaning toward an unacceptable vote . . .

I'd lean that way too...though I'd still use it since I don't SEE any bad
behavior. But I'm wondering if anyone has actually tried contacting the
developer...

It doesn't look as if the new program descriptions will be complete by
December 1. I am reluctant to remove a large number of programs from
the ballot.

There are still 56 programs with incomplete descriptions. Only a few
people have furnished additional information. Because little information
is coming in it does not seem to make sense to postpone the election for
any great length of time.

In the next two days I will try to finish the descriptions that are
*almost* complete - but I make no guarantees.

If you want to *ensure* that a program is on the ballot - send the
completed description *ASAP*. Programs with incomplete descriptions will
*not* be shown.

Revised dates are:
VOTING (1 week): December 3 - December 9, 2003
POST-VOTE DISCUSSION (1 week): December 10 - December 16, 2003
FINAL LISTED POSTED: December 17, 2003

FYI: There will be one ballot for all programs - similar to the ballot
for seconding carryover nominations - programs will be listed
alphabetically.

There will be two additional ballots to vote on the acceptability/
unacceptability of certain programs for the Pricelessware List. If there
are no last minute additions the programs on those ballots will be:

40tude Dialog
Desktop Architect
ePrompter
KaZaA Lite
Trillian
There are issues that need to be resolved - mostly questions about
*which* version we are voting on.

To resolve those issues I have made the following changes:
AI RoboForm - VERSION?
(Freeware) (last uncrippled version)
Desktop Architect - WARNING? porn / spyware?
added:
WARNING: The Desktop Architect home page is gone. The Desktop Architect
URL (http://www.desktoparchitect.com/) found within the Desktop
Architect program points to unrelated web pages that may have unsafe or
objectionable content.
Graph Paper Printer - VERSION?
(Freeware) (last uncrippled version)
note - this is a change from the PL2003 Liteware version
Kerio Personal Firewall - VERSION?
(Liteware) (earlier version)
Mailwasher -VERSION?
(Freeware) (last uncrippled versions)
PopCorn - VERSION?
(Freeware) (last uncrippled version)
Terragen - Crippled?
It is Liteware (not Freeware)
added:
NOTES: . . . The Liteware version limits images to no larger than 1280 x
960, terrains to no larger than 513 x 513 and does not have enhanced
anti-aliasing modes.
TypeItIn - VERSION?
v 2.1 (Mar 10, 2000) (707 KB)
WinDriversBackup Personal Edition - now $ware: is a legal last freeware
version available?
Yes
(Freeware) (last free version) (free for non-commercial use)

AFAIK these new programs have incomplete descriptions (I haven't looked
at all of them - some may be complete):
