Many thanks - makes it easier to keep up with the many nominations.

Thank you. :) the Nominations page *now* has 499 :)
Suggesting minor adjustments: I see you have "AR RAM DISK" and
"XMSDSK" (neither not seconded yet) listed under the sub-category
"5 CD Tool" on <www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004SYSTEMUTILITIES.htm>
and <www.pricelessware.org/2004/2004nominationsPL.php>.

Suggested category in
<was:
"Memory Utility" Just a slip? IMHO neither belongs under "CD Tool"
(even if a ram disk utility can be used with a boot-cd).

Along the same line, I notice the "Memory utility" category from 2003
page is missing, and replaced with "1 RAM Tester" "2 Process Monitor:
RAM" and "4 RAM Manager". Not sure if this is the smart thing to do,
compared to keeping the older - broader category. But if you want to
keep in line with this division - then I suggest Ram-disks utilities
get their own category...namely "RAM-DISK UTIL" - at least for the
nomination phase :)

Hi Bjorn,

I agree adjustments are needed. The plan is to discuss and revise the
subcategories during the discussion period.

My theory for this phase is that close counts in horse shoes, hand
grenades *and* program subcategories. I've tried to use existing
subcategories or I've added a generic sucategory with just a number - to
get the programs somewhat grouped.

Please bear with me for now . . .

Although maybe not very important, still: I do think it can matter if
a program is listed as *one of its kind* among the many nominated -
compared to if it is listed along side four or five others in the
"same" category. Anyone looking over the list of programs not (yet)
nominated *might* stop and read more carefully, think twice and maybe
even try a program, *if* it is listed/grouped as the only one (or two)
in a category, compared to if is listed as one of several other
(seconded) ones. Oh well :)

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

FURTHER NOTE: Some PCmag utilities were nominated. All PCmag utilities
were *removed* from PL2003 since there is now a charge to access them. I
have *not* listed the nominations. Further discussion, if any seems
necessary, can be posted in this thread at this time.

FURTHER FUTHER NOTE: HDValet was nominated - it is also a PCmag utility.
It will be removed from the Nominations page.

I know you are busy. Just thought I would point out a couple of
things.

QuickSilver was seconded and you don't even have Reliable listed.

I'm sure this is just an innocent oversight on your part and not an
attempt to prejudge and exclude programs based on personal bias.

QuickSilver was seconded here is the message id
<[email protected]>

Also you don't have Reliable on the list as a nomintation. Here is
the message id for that <35ZSUZVR37929.4158217593@anonymous>

I posted the oversights yesterday before you updated the nomination
list. Here is the message id for that

Susan, maybe you should repost the first message of each of the
nomination threads, that is:

Subject: [PL] 2004 Carryover Nominations
Subject: [PL] 2004 New Nominations
Subject: [PL] 2004 General Discussion
Subject: [PL] 2004 Program Descriptions

This as a favor to new readers. Some news servers might not carry old
messages that long (1), I guess particularly relevant for the first
message in those threads.

If you do - maybe you should add a first line explaining it is only a
re-post, say lik "[Re-posted for new readers]" or something like it -
so the old-timers will not mistake it for something "new". :)

(1)see for example A.A. Fussy in

not as new threads.

Nominations are now open for the the 2004 Pricelessware list.

This thread is for general discussion.

The Nominations page is here:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/2004nominationsPL.php

The election schedule and procedures are here:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/2004proceduresPL.htm

and are repeated below.

Susan

-----------

This is the timetable for the 2004 vote.

NOMINATIONS (2 weeks): November 3 - November 16, 2003
DISCUSSION (2 weeks): November 17 - November 30, 2003
VOTING (1 week): December 1 - December 7, 2003
POST-VOTE DISCUSSION (1 week): December 8 - December 14, 2003
FINAL LISTED POSTED: December 15, 2003

NOMINATIONS

The Pricelessware List is the compilation of the favorite Freeware
programs of the readers of alt.comp.freeware. The programs picked are
not meant to be an exhaustive list of the best available Freeware, but
rather an answer to the often asked "which _____ is best?"

We are selecting the best of the best in Windows programs.

Pricelessware programs may not contain adware or spyware. The program
should be one of the best Freeware programs available.

Sub-categories are provided for ease of reference, but it is NOT the
goal of the Pricelessware vote to come up with a program to fit every
category.

If a program is nominated in more than one category the most appropriate
category will be determined during the discussion period. Programs will
be listed only once on the ballot.

note: Please nominate programs in an existing category and sub-category.
(A new sub-category may be suggested if all the existing sub-categories
seem inappropriate.)

The preceding year's Pricelessware programs are nominated automatically.
All nominations must have a second to be placed on the ballot. (Two
nominations of the same program are considered a nomination and a second.)

In addition, each program must have a complete description and
description review. The description *should* be prepared by the person
who nominates the program and reviewed by the person who seconds a
nomination. Someone else *may* prepare the description and/or review in
order to qualify the program for a place on the ballot.

VOTING

Vote *only* for the programs that you feel merit inclusion on the list.
If you want to vote for 3 different e-mail programs because you believe
all 3 deserve to be on the list, then vote for those 3. Conversely, if
in your opinion none of the programs listed merit inclusion, do not cast
a vote.

FINAL SELECTION

A program must receive at least 2 votes to qualify for inclusion on the PL.

In categories where several programs received enough votes to qualify,
only the top vote getters will be picked.

If you find that there is a glaring omission, please post it in the
appropriate thread. If there is support for inclusion, an overlooked
program will be added to the list.

If you feel that a program selected for the PL is not a good choice,
please post:

Program Name
Category
Objections

If there is support for removal, a program which has been voted in will
be removed from the list.

Oops, my mistake. I had it in the wrong folder on my PC. Apologies, Susan.

Accepted, DAN.

I was *trying* to verify program names - to ensure that names on the
Nomination page are the official program names. Finding one Shareware
nomination was irritating - finding a second Shareware nomination
moments later was *very* irritating.

As I believe you noticed. ;)

514 programs on the list . . .

I have uploaded a new set of pages. They should contain all the programs
that have been nominated to date - 520 by my count.

If your program isn't there or if I missed a second to a nomination
please let me know ASAP. Check the cross-reference column first - the
*name* may have been revised.

Please use the description shown on the web page as a starting point
when you post program descriptions. Some programs were nominated by more
than one person - I am seeing conflicting information.

We're making progress . . . :)

pages or the link does not work.

CamStudio
EF Commander
Free PDF
FTP Genius
JB Cat
LastQF
Mozilla Calendar Plugin
MsDVR 2000

A homepage for this seems to be totally gone. Not long back, a month or
two ago, I went on a fairly intent hunt for any scent of it, but came
back empty.

If anyone finds anything, would like to know. I have the program, just
want to know of any possible homebase for it.
