Links to my website and htm/html

A number of years ago we set up our site with the html extensions. A lot of
orgs set up links to our site.

I recently rebuilt our site with Frontpage and all of my pages are now .htm.

I just found out that the links to our site no longer work. People on other
sites have been trying to get to our page at
http://www.nationalminiaturestrust.org/museums.html, but they get an error
message. The address needs to be .htm.

I have no idea how many organizations are trying to link to our site. Is
there something that I can do to update my pages? Are .htm and .html
interchangeable? I tried to resave all of my pages as .html pages in
Frontpage, but the extensions remained .htm.

This has been an annoying problem as I've uploaded my site as well. My
server requires my index to be .html. I have to upload index.htm, delete
index.html on the server, and then change my index.htm to index.html.

There has to be an easier way. Please help! Many thanks!

The only page that needs to have the .html extension is your home page. However you could always ask
your web host to allow you to use .htm for your home page as well.

You can also keep both .htm and .html versions of your home page in your web, as long as you are not
using FP navigation components.

You are going to have to physically rename all of your pages from .htm to .html and let FP update links,
and then publish your web.

I'm trying to rename all of my pages to html, but I can't seem to get it to
work. I've tried two different option.

1. When I try to "save as" and change the format type from web page to HTML
page, I get the message that it already exists. The page remains .htm.

2. When I right click and try to change it, I get the error that it already
exists.

I want my pages to be .html. Otherwise, the dozens of pages that link to my
site will have broken links because the links are set to go to site.html and
not .htm.

Can I somehow change the default so that all of my pages are always .html
and not .htm.

There is no setting to change the default file extension of .htm.

Are you trying to change the filenames on the live/remote site or your local copy?

I'm trying to change the filenames on both I guess. I need my live/remote
site to have .html extensions. I can not have pages on the live site with
..htm extensions. Ideally my local and remote pages would be identical. Is
that possible? Can I keep .html pages on my local? How do I change all of the
pages on the remote?

Yes. On the local copy I have tried two different methods to change the
files from .htm to .html.
1. When I try to "save as" and change the format type from web page to HTML

There is a fairly easy way to change all the *.htm to *.html files by
using the DOS command prompt, but it will muck up your navigation
structure.

When you try to "save as", are you actually typing in the "L" onto the
end of the file extension?

When I hit "save as," I do not have the option of changing the extension,
only the name and type. I have changed the file type to HTML, but the .htm
extension remains.

Where you change the name, you can change the extension at the same
time.

Once again I ask:

You don't need to change anything in the "Save as type" dialog box,
only change the "name" of the file from "this_file.htm" to
"this_file.html" by physically adding the "L" to the file name.

That was it. I didn't realize that I could change the extension by simply
hitting save as, and then "FILENAME.html". Perfect. Thanks!

Sometimes, when we think we are looking for a complicated answer, it's
easy to fly right by the simple one.

If you rename each file/page from within FP, it should ask if you want
to change the links associated with each page before it saves it with
the new extension. This should maintain your navigation structure.

If you want to do a mass rename, let me know, I can tell you how to do
it from the "Command Prompt" with the DOS command "rename". This will
not maintain your nav structure but you can rename all the files in a
folder with one step.

Don't use Save As - this will not change the links in other pages.
Close all pages (if any are open) and choose file view.
Right click each file and choose rename
Change the extension by adding an l to the htm
Move on to the next file. FP may ask if you wish to update all files
linking to this page (just changed). Agree.
Repeat for the other pages.

Finally, go to View->Reports->Problems->Hyperlinks and check the broken
links report. You can correct any broken links there.
