I'm packing it up and sending it back

Scott

I'm givng up on Vista for now.
I spent 400 dollar on this Pile of Beta crap and after 30 days I'm
giving up on it. I expect a 400.00 piece of software to at least be
useable but I'm sick of all the "not responding" programs and unkown
failures.

You were overcharged.

Don't know. I use 6.06.

The short answer is it will be out when it is out. Regardless 6.06
Dapper is no longer considered the latest stable release. 6.10 Edgy is
the most recent release however it isn't the one that is being pressed.
It is available as a download only. 6.06 is the one that has the long
term support.

I have 2 problems that caused me to stop using Ubuntu.

1. I couldn't get the dial-up modem working. It is an Intel HDA modem
that uses a conexant chipset. Linuxant drivers choked when installing
due to snd-hda-intel already running and could not be unloaded. I had
alot of difficulty and never did succeed.

2. The wireless adapter could not be setup. The version of ndiswrapper
that is provided is old and the newer one could not be compiled. If I
could of compiled it then it is likely that the wireless would of worked
but...

Other than that everything worked. It got the correct resolution and
detected about 98% of my hardware correctly. Even got my card reader.

There are plenty of games. Just not ones that *you* might want to play.
There is cedega and wine which will allow you to play windows games
within linux. There is support for most printer drivers. Unlike vista
they tend to have support for the old printers in addition to the new
ones. Most people wouldn't use the alpha quality stuff and wouldn't
know about them anyways.

Oh and one last thing.... for devices that don't have manufacturer
supplied drivers.... there are user supplied ones!

Oh and I could care less about game support. I use linux as an

P.S. - to extend on the learning bit... I am installing gentoo next.
Research it and you will understand.

..after installing all basic KDE (around 500MB as I recall) which

Well you recall incorrectly. Try 70MB, I just added up all my gnome related
packages and barely scratched that much.
..after installing the Gnome libraries which bloats the OS thus making
it as bad as your despised Windows for bloat.

I think I will take 70 megs over Vista's 18 gigs.

Or in this case, 4.6 gigabytes for the entire operating system and every
single one of my applications (which make up 2.2 gigs out of the 4.6) over
18 gigs.

Really? How does it do that considering nVidia didn't release *BETA* drivers
until AFTER Vista was released? They do have non-beta drivers now last I
checked a few days ago, without DX10 support that is...

But since that wasn't available when Vista was released, please do tell me,
how exactly does Vista include them? Is it psychic or something?

Oh and what you are saying is bullshit. Sure, windows comes with vendor
supplied drivers (as does kubuntu). But just like kubuntu, it comes with
whatever was available at the time it was released!

Meaning WinXP does *NOT* support my 7800 GT out of the box without me having
to download the vendor drivers from nVidia. Nor would I expect it to.

Same deal with Kubuntu, it was released prior to my graphics cards existance
so it doesn't have that driver bundled with it. So I had to download the
driver and install it. Big friggin deal. Have to do that with XP too.

The latest version of it that is still in Beta however does work with my
card out of the box with nVidia drivers as it is a newer release!

On one of my other systems with a 6600, Kubuntu supports it 100% without me
having to install any updated drivers. Older card, existed prior to version
6.10 release date and it is supported.

See a pattern emerging here?
I NOTED THAT YOU DIDN'T ARGUE ABOUT WIFI.

I don't use laptops therefore I don't need or use Wifi. Since I don't use
it, I can't comment (or argue) about it.
Because you downloaded and installed them. BTWE, libdvdcss is illegal
to use.

Illegal to use **** in the US ****.
I am not in the US.

There is more than one country in this world and US laws don't apply in
them.

And if I was in the US and had a problem with it being illegal, I could
always buy a DVD Player software for linux (commercial apps do exist) that
is perfectly legal. Same way I bought PowerDVD for Windows since I don't
use the bundled crap that comes with DVD players.

There is the madwifi for most atheros chipset based cards. ipw3945 for
Intel 3945 chipset based devices. Then ndiswrapper for the rest where
only windows drivers exist.

ndiswrapper compatibility list:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/List
No vendor provided 3d drivers have been supplied in Ubuntu as it would
taint the "free software" mantra.

This is untrue. The official drivers have not been provided because
they are not open source. Everything in the distro needs to be provided
in source code so if the code isn't available then it isn't provided.
They do have an open source version for both nVidia and ATI cards. If
users need the 3d capable versions then they can be downloaded from
either nVidia.com or ATI.com. These are supported by their respective
companies.

Both ATI and Nvidia have drivers out for Linux distributions.

Nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

For ATI look under the category labeled Linux.

Nvidia is supporting IA32, IA64, AMD64/EM64T, FreeBSD and Solaris
platforms. Quite a bit there. ATI supports both x86 and x86_64
platforms of linux.
Where is the WMA support? Where is the Realplayer support? Where is the
Quicktime support? Why do I have to install an illegal library to watch
a CSS encoded commercial DVD?

libdvdcss is able as illegal as AnyDVD is on the windows platform....
and I use that application.

Oh and I saw on another post that you were referring to out of the box
support. Well when I installed XP support here is what I saw out of the
box and yes Vista is a completely different ballpark.

WIFI support -- no (install vendor supplied drivers)
DVD playback support -- no (purchase a 3rd party player)
DRM -- no (update WMP)
RealPlayer -- no (download required)
Quicktime -- no (download required)
3D support -- yes but extremely limited. (install vendor supplied drivers)

And now Vista when it was first installed.

WIFI support -- no (no vendor drivers available for adapter)
DVD playback support -- yes (only because I have ultimate otherwise i
would be required to buy a 3rd party player)
DRM -- yes (why do i want this?)
RealPlayer -- no (download required)
Quicktime -- no (download required)
3D support -- yes but drivers are late for any decent game performance.
(install vendor supplied drivers)

Yep, it is. Course, if you knew anything about Linux (you don't), you would

typing out their password.

Windows, OTOH, needs no password to get a drive by meanie or a root kit.

In the unlikely event that one does give permission for a nasty to install,
there is an AV program that comes with Ubuntu to get rid of it, or at
worst, one can create a new account and nuke the infected account or just
ignore it. Window can't even dream of doing that.

How many computer bots do you think the spammers and scammers have in their
stable? Zero. How many Windows boxes? Millions.

You're just jealous because linux users don't have to pay for software and
don't have to jump through all the ineffective anti piracy programs that
come with Windows. With just the cost of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007, I
could build three computers with Linux.

False. The reason is that Linux is so secure, they can't harvest Linux

Guess why? Because Linux is such an inferior OS that it's not worth the

Looking at the linux vs windows vulnerability argument from perhaps a
different perspective, was it not at one time the notoriety of being the
one to successfully attack an os that provided the reward for the
attacker? If so, it would seem clear that linux during that era was not
an especially easy target regardless of the numbers of systems of each
in use. Let us suppose now that financial rewards drive the majority of
attacks on an os. Obviously, the larger ms segment will attract the most
attention by those inclined to do the attacking. At the same time,
though, the lesser linux segment is not under constant attack, although
if the objective of the attacker is to make money, then certainly there
should be enough linux numbers to make attacks financially attractive.
Yet it does not happen. Notoriety and financial gain are powerful
incentives, yet linux remains relatively unscathed by the attackers. I
just can't believe that numbers (or lack therof) or inferiority are the
reasons for the lack of attacks on linux. ymmv
