IE6 SP1 and Jpegs

I've read through the forum and looked through all the pages so far and all
seem to point to problems with NO pictures displayed in IE6.
My problem is that IE6 (and windows explorer) display Jpegs but they are all
corrupted. If I double click on them then my default graphics package views
them correctly. I believe it must be the default viewers for explorer and
IE6 but I don't know what or where they are, nor where they would appear in
the registry.
I am using win2k pro SP3.

Cheers

In what way are they corrupted?

The pictures look stripy using just primary colours, the actual subject of
the picture is present as an outline. But as i said the colours are
corrupted
