HATE new Windows Mail

S

Steve Cochran

Let me jump in here (splash). I think what is happening is that WinMail is
fixed where it looks for the TO when you click on the TO button to grab
contacts. So one can't use a subfolder under the contacts window that you
see in Explorer.

So in order to get WinMail to work properly that way she likes it, she
would have to overwrite what is in the root contact directory with what is
in the group subfolder and then when WinMail opens, the subfolder contacts
would show, and if mailing to another group (as another "Identity") she
would need a different contact subfolder contents written to the root
contact directory so that those contacts would show.

I understand it I think, and it shouldn't be hard to program.

i cant even sign on. new user yes page doesnt exist. is mail still in
existance for new users??

Sure. You can create and manage all the POP accounts you want. Just choose
Tools > Accounts from the menu bar.

For message groups, click New Message Group in Windows Contacts.

Tip of the day: If you want everything to be like Windows XP, use Windows
XP.

to BOB concerning PLAXO

I contacted Plaxo and this was their reply;I understand that you have
upgraded the operating system of your computer to Windows Vista and you would
like to install the Plaxo Toolbar on Windows mail. I truly value your concern
regarding it.

Regarding your concern about installing the Plaxo Toolbar on your Windows
Mail, please note that at present Plaxo does not have the Toolbar for Windows
Mail and Plaxo is not compatible with Windows Mail.

I appreciate the time you have taken to ask about this feature. We will
consider it as a feedback from you and we will consider it for our future
plan to improve our services. Because of input like yours, we have developed
Plaxo Toolbar for Mozilla Thunderbird, Plaxo Toolbar for Internet Explorer
etc.

However, please note that now we have a Beta version of Plaxo Toolbar for
Outlook 2007, which is compatible with Microsoft Vista. If you would like to
download the Beta version of Plaxo Toolbar for Outlook 2007 then please
access the following link to download the Beta version of Plaxo Toolbar for
Outlook 2007.

So how does one get just "outlook"??? I really dont like Windows
mail........I forward way too much stuff to mess with this long list of email
addresses!! It just doesnt seem to be very Home user friendly!! I certainly
am not gonna go thru all the work around stuff some people have
offered.........again......home users as a general rule are not very computer
savy...........and I am afraid vista and window mail has not been set up for
the Home user..........in fact I am more savy than most people I know (home
users).......I have to help them with all kinds of things.....I wouldnt
recommend Vista to any of them.........they would be lost..........
why do you not like outlook? I have never used it........but would consider
it over windows mail at this point........does it still use identities? My
husband and I have different email addresses........and can't use windows
mail without identities cause we cant switch back and forth.........and then
this whole contact thing is ridiculous!! I thought they were suppose to make
things easier with each new OS........but such has not been the
case..........at least not for Home users........I do not worry about
privacy........just want to be able to use email with two identities and dont
want to have to put in a password everytime you go to use
something.........have to use passwords enough on the internet......very
disappointed in the whole Vista experience...........learned on 95 and then
got ME..........loved it actually......hated to give it up for
this..............

Stop using passwords then. They are optional.

In older versions of windows one could use Switch Identities command. In XP
and Vista there was a new way. Switch User on the Start menu (if accounts
don't have passwords then you just click). It leaves User1 intact (all
programs still open etc) while letting User2 have the computer to check
mail. Then User1 either switches back or User2 logs off (or locks). It works
pretty much the same, just clicking in Start rather than OE's File menu.

You buy outlook in a shop (it's very expensive as a single product). It does
NOT support identities.

why can't you create accounts with the different email addresses. then create rules for each email address to send the mail to his/her own folder.
I have 3 email addresses and manage to do this with NO problems.

when it comes to forwarding mail, personally I hate to receive forwarded mail and have to click numerous times to eventually open the email.
I try to teach people to copy / paste and create new mail instead of forward.

thank you.......nothing I have read has ever explained that to me.....I was
under the assumption that if you had two users......you had to put password
in for everything you went to use.......I have never used XP so have no
knowledge of it either.....most people I know still use 98.......and I dont
think microsoft realizes just how many people have never upgraded to
xp.....and is very intimidated by going to vista.....altho they all are going
to have to sooner or later......the help menus are not really that
helpful......they assume the average home user knows about
computers.......but they dont.........in fact in my neck of the
woods......alot of people have never even used one........so I can add him as
a user.....set up an email account for him with his email address........and
we switch users in the start menu.......correct? thanks so much for
explaining this............

Yes correct. And Windows 95 and 98 could also do this but most didn't use
this feature then OE invented Identies (even though multi user was
available) when they were semi independent of the OS unit. Perhaps the OE
team did this because users had to logoff rather than switch in 95/98.

I don't understand. If you and your spouse share the same email
address, why would you need to have separate Identities or
separate Windows logins?

Under your previous arrangement (Identities), when one spouse
checks the mail, this pulls the mail off the server (normally), such
that when the other spouse then does a mail check in their Identity,
there are no messages left on the server. Instead of all this
unnecessary duplication, you guys should be sharing a common
Message Store if you only have one email address.

Incidentally, most ISPs will give you additional email addresses
if you ask.

Work around for opening attachments - email the file to your Yahoo account,
then it will open, thank you Microsoft for making my workday more efficient

I agree with both of you and already reported dissatisfaction to MS.
I believe more of us feel the same but not everybody say so.
New Windows Mail is slower than OE was, and address book is
simply a missed effort. It seems that MS Redmond forgot
about an old principle : If it works don't try to fix it.

I hate windows mail also it is not user friendly, the people at microsoft need
to go back to school.

I just got a laptop a couple months ago with Vista and winmail. I also HATE
the new contact system. Windows Address Book previously let me organize
contacts into separate folders (for instance contacts that I no longer were
using I could put in a folder that labeled "old 2006" for instance. I would
still have the information but I would not have to look thru all of them when
I only needed recent contacts. Now they are all jumbled together. This is an
awful system. There ought to be a way for those who wish to go back to
using Windows Address Book instead of the new contacts system.

This issue runs rampant thru several of these discussions....I just hope
someone is listening!!!!

Thanks,
