HATE new Windows Mail

I am going nuts! When I write new message or forward, the "contact" opens up
every single one of my 350 contacts. I have to scroll through the whole
thing to find the 15 or so friends. It's taking me A LOT time. Setting up
"new group" is not an option, as I don't use the same people each time. The
old Outlook Express has different folder you can open up and I can pick from
there.

Go to Start | Programs | Windows Contacts and you will see the new format
for the contacts. There is also a button on the WinMail toolbar to open
that window. And you can add them to the sidebar as a gadget but you need a
bigger sidebar with 350. <G>

Guess I didn't make it clear. I know how to get into contact, I want my
contact info managed so that when I write an email and click the "To" which
pulls up the address book, I don't have to scroll through 300 names. It's
the "identities" that's missing from my address book, and looks like the only
way around it is to set up a separate "user" in my computer so I can sort my
business contacts from my personal contacts. It is such a round-about way to
get something done, and takes twice as much time!

I totally agree with you.....this mail sucks........I have the same
problem.....as I am sure everyone else does also..........I am used to going
to new message and selecting recepients......takes forever to go thru the
whole list........maybe they will come up with something.......because I cant
see everyone dealing with this long list of addresses everyday for the long
haul!!!!!!!!!

also really want "identities" back.......where you can set up two different
mail accounts for two different people and switch back and forth.......my
husband and I use the same computer.......and we use the same files and go to
mostly the same pages........I am not setting this thing up for two
users.......which just opens up another can of worms to deal with......

Thanks goodness someone else understands my fustration! I'm thinking about
switching to Outlook, but Outlook has a whole new set of problems (GRR!!!) I
love Outlook Express - why did they do away with it and replaced it with
something not user friendly?

The other problem, as far as I can tell, is using email on two different
computers with occasional syncs. My new laptop uses Vista; my older (and
far more used) desktop has XP. When I travel, I like to copy the mail I
receive while away into OE on my desktop. That does not seem possible with
Vista. So, I'm thinking of switching back to Eudora (which I hope will run
on Vista). The main reason I moved away from Eudora a few years ago was
because it wasn't supported by Plaxo. Since Windows Mail isn't either, that
removes that issue. Eudora (I hope) will run with both XP and Vista,
allowing me to sync up the mail from one computer to the other.

You don't see a line at the top in Contacts where you can search?

If I type in D, the first items with D appear. No scrolling required.

Then there is the autocomplete for the To: line. Type in the first few
letters......

Use Outlook Express!

I have been doing so for the past two months for my email. I just use
Windows Mail for the newsgroups.

How do you use Outlook Express with Vista? Is there a site where it can be
downloaded? And why don't you just use OE for your Newsgroups as well?
Does Windows Mail work better for newsgroups?

My OEX program (www.oehelp.com/OEX/) will let you import from OE into Vista
and vice versa. You can also save eml files from OE and drag them into
Windows Mail folders and opposite works as well.

The only way to use OE in Vista is to set up a Virtual XP (or other) machine
in Vista and use it from there.

I've never seen the need for Identities.
If you need the additional privacy, use a separate Windows login.
If privacy doesn't matter, use a filter rule to automatically
sort incoming mail into a His folder and a Hers folder.

Outlook 2003 and higher work on Vista.

Many have indicated reasons that they like the Identities feature and miss
that it is lacking. I never used it either, but it has its merits, and so
I'm writing something to replace and enhance it.

Your suggestion is insufficient for people who have no problems with
security, but have their own signatures (stored in the registry) or their
own message store paths, or even single individuals who have archived
message stores, or who have personal versus business signatures, message
stores, newsservers and newsgroups and etc. There is no reason not to have
such choices within a user space, as long as its understood there is no
security between such Identities across the user space.

Yes, I can search, but it's still time consuming compared to the old OE when
I'm sending bcc to 6 people. Without "identities," the program is just
cumbersome to maneuver.
