Files and Settings Transfer Wizard turns off computers

Well, today I got a null adapter, connected to the cable and plugged in both
machines. Good enough, machines did not die. However, now I'm unable to set
up a new direct network connection. When I run wizard on the host machine,
I'm getting error message: <Incoming Connections depend on the Routing and
Remote Access Service which was unable to start. For more information check
the system event log>. Looks like there is no end to my troubles...

Hi Ilya,

Ok, so now at least we know it was the wrong cable.

On the error message, click start/run and type cmd, then click ok. From the
prompt, run this:

net start RemoteAccess
(no space between 'remote' and 'access').

If it does not start, click start/run and type services.msc, then click ok.
Scroll down to that service (it's near the bottom, they are alphabetical)
and double click it. Go to the Recovery tab, set the first action to
"restart the service", then click apply. On the general tab, set the startup
type to manual. Click apply/ok, then close all windows and reboot the
system.
