File Transfer Wizard problems

I'm trying to transfer my files from my old Win95 PC to my new XP PC. (They
are connected by a null modem serial cable.) The new PC doesn't have a floppy
& you can't put the wizard on a CD so I put in on my USB then copied to CD.
However, when I try to run FASTWiz.exe on my old PC from its CD drive, it
says "This Wizard requires Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 or later with at
least Internet Explorer 4.00". The old Win95 PC doesn't have any internet
connection. Where can I downlolad IE 4 and how to install on my old PC?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know how comfortable you would be to open the Case and attach the
old drive to your new computer?
There's plenty of info on the Internet which will show you how to do
this.
Once that is done you can just copy and paste the files over to the new
drive.

Is there absolutely no way to transfer my files with the serial cable?

It's been a while, but I could open the case etc. Do you happen to know any
good links for that?

Thanks.

Way back with Win95 they had something called "direct cable connection"(DCC)
which allowed one to connect two computers using a serial cable or something
called a direct parallel cable. " The serial connection was slow as Xmas but
it worked. Luckily, DCC is still available with XP.

You will find the following KB articles useful, I think:

KB#305621 - "How To Set Up a Direct Cable Connection Between Two Computers
in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305621

KB#298446 - "How to Install and Configure the Direct Cable Connection
Feature"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298446

With any luck, DCC will work for you.

OK, it looks like I got the DCC working. Old Win95 PC is host & new WinXP PC
is guest. However, I don't see the Win95 shared drives anywhere in Explorer
on my new PC. Where should they show up? I don't see them under My Network
Places or anywhere else. What else do I need to do to get this working?

Thanks in advance!

It's been so long since I've used DCC that I don't remember. As I recall,
however, I think I had to explicity share the folders and drives on one
machine before they could be seen on the other.

You may find "KB#310152 - Unable to Connect Using Direct Cable Connection"
useful. Find it at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310152

You may also find the 6-part "kb#814981 -How to Configure a Direct Cable
Connection with Windows XP Home Edition" useful. It starts at:

Using the above, I was trying to connect to the Win95 PC via Run: \\computer
name\share name but I get an error that the network path wasn't found. Can
you only connect 2 WinXP machines?

I changed the Win95 PC's workgroup to match the WinXP workgroup. How can I
access the host Win95 shared drives?

Thanks.
