Faxing

E

Edward

Hi.

I have looked around, without success, to try and find an answer to this -

To ditch my antiquated fax machine, I have set up fax Send and Receive on my
XP Home. It works okay, except if I answer the phone before the configured
number of rings. Then it will fail.

If I wait for the configured number of rings (say 2), and it is not a fax,
the connection is lost.

The answer I need is - if I pick up the phone before the designated number
of rings and hear the fax tone, how do I make sure XP downloads the fax,
even though I have picked up the receiver?

The answer will allow me time to increase the rings and to answer the phone
before XP cuts it off because it's not a fax.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Buy a modern FAX machine and a intelligent switch that
detects whether a phone call is voice, fax or even a
computer and routes the call properly.

Using computers as FAX machines is really a step backward in
function and a severe case of over-kill CPU-wise.

FAX signal are sounds, slow audible sound. When you pick up
the phone you make the connection hear the static,
background noise and the computer breaks the connection.
The only fix is to use a FAX machine and a switch.

Thanks, Jim. I have that, but it is trying to get a totally mobile
"landline" phone (that can be carried around the house and garden), but
these can't be found with a fax capability - only answerphone.

That is why I decided to try the PC for the fax element of my needs. So far,
the only way is to use 'Manual' answering for the fax but this doesn't work
if I'm away from home with the answerphone on.

What is needed, I think, is a switching device within XP.

I think you'd best be served with a dedicated FAX number and
a stand-alone FAX machine or get a FAX service that will
allow you to use a professional Internet FAX service to send
and receive FAXs on the Internet. They will provide a relay
between the Internet (broadband if you have it) to the POTS
system with a phone number (national 800) for your account
with them (extra cost, they can even make it a "local number
to your location"). When you get a FAX they will email you
a notice and make the FAX an attachment. You could get that
over your Internet ready phone (cell).

Thanks, Jim. Yes I looked at a fax service. Maybe I will have to look again.
I receive so few, I wonder whether I am worrying too much. Trouble is, you
can bet when I don't have it, I'll need it like hell!!

I send an occasional FAX from my computer and include a
cover page stating that I do not have any means to GET a FAX
and saying to reply by email. I do give a FAX number for a
local store that does have a FAX send/rec service if they
absolutely must reply by FAX.
