Failed to start after installed SP2

I recently installed SP2 in my computer and it failed to start after
restarted, not even on safemode or safemode with command prompt.

After many attempts to fix, finally i found out it happened because of my
BIOS USB2.0 controller. And my computer has driver from Intel installed.

I formatted my computer (very sadly), and reinstall xp with SP2, before
installing hardware drivers. I noticed my USB2.0 not installed, so I
installed it with file downloaded from Intel website. All went smooth for
other devices until it reached driver for USB2.0, computer suddently
restart. I managed to get the computer up again after selected 'Last Known
Good Configuration'. This kept on happenning everytime I install the driver.

Feeling giving up, I went to BIOS setting and turn off the USB2.0 support,
and now everything went smooth. However, my USB external HDD runs very
slowly.

It's a wonder, too, that even after service pack 1a, I still need to install
USB2.0 driver manually. I read somewhere saying SP1a would turn it on, but
it didn't.

Any solution to this matter?

Thanks all.

Question: Is all your USB ports version2.0 or is only one or two? If the
port controller is an Enhanced USB port (2.0), the motherboard should report
this to Windows XP and XP should address it as such. First, check with
motherboard manufacturer and see if a bios update is available.

Try this:
Leave your external drive off.
Enable USB2.0 in the bios.
Uninstall any USB2.0 drivers you installed.
Reboot.
Let Windows completely boot.
Turn your external drive on and see what kind of transfer speed you get
copying and writing a file to it.
With SP1 and SP2 you should not need to install USB2.0 drivers unless it is
for an add-in card or if the specific motherboard manufacturer states that
it is needed even with SP1 and 2.

All USB ports are v2.0.

I tried your solution, deleted all USB drivers in device manager, restarted,
enabled USB2.0 support in BIOS, load windows, systems auto-installed usb
drivers, until it reached USB mouse, it prompted me to install driver, so i
clicked on next and after then computer restarted again, like before.

So, I suspected it must be the mouse driver, so I choose last known good
configuration and i skip the mouse driver, and everything works. Then I
manually select the mouse driver, and things works like charm now.

I must stress here that the mouse driver that caused problem was from
Windows Update website. Silly, isn't it?

Thanks dude.

That is why it is never a good idea to install Windows Update drivers.
It is curious as I have seen many many posts where people have been
having problems with their USB Mice and SP2. Guess we'll have to wait
for the flood of new drivers that should be coming out in the near
future that should fix any of the problems introduced by SP2.

It is strange about all the USB problems.
I've tried the SP2 installation on a few machines now and the best result
has been a clean install with a slipstreamed SP2 installation disc.
I took one computer and installed SP2 to an existing SP1 install, and it was
miserable slow. I wiped it and clean installed WinXP SP2. It runs just as
fast as ever (same software setup).
A couple of installations have worked just fine.

I have a notebook that I connect and remove a few USB devices on.
With all unplugged, I installed SP2 and it just about killed it.
Did a clean install and it works just fine. All USB devices work fine.

Who knows at this point. We may all be part of a lab experiment. :)

Actually, the people who were "part of the lab experiment" were the beta
testers. The problem is that, though there were a large number of
testers, not all of them are going to have the exact same setup as other
people in the world. What makes it even more difficult is that most
average users' computers are in much worse shape than the technical beta
testers. Trying to simulate the poor state (viruses, malware, etc.) of
the average user is difficult. As the service pack gets older, there
will be less and less problems because we will finally have SP2 designed
drivers/software instead of software and drivers that simply run on SP2
or have been patched to run on SP2.

Even though I've read that SP2 supposably includes all of SP1, my
experience, via trial by fire, so far has been that it is absolutely vital
that a computer be operating with NO (read: zero) errors or other operating
system related problems (such as malware of any kind) and for it to have
already been fully updated to SP1 (not just with the critical but also with
the recommended Windows as well as the driver updates) before applying SP2.
Under those exact conditions I've not had any problems with multiple SP2
updates I've done (so far, and knock on wood!)

SP2 includes all the updates of SP1 plus newer ones. By creating a
slipstreamed installation disk that installs Windows XP SP2 from the start,
I've had very good results. (as your say, knock knock on wood) :)
After my last install, I checked Windows Update. There were only a couple of
updates, and if I remember right, they we're recommends or drivers. No
critical updates.
