USB 2.0 problem

F

Freeck

I installed a 4 port USB2.0 PCI-card on my MSI6380LE MB (6 on board USB1.1
ports). All drivers have been upgraded (WinXP-SP1). After restarting my PC
the card is recognized, but after attaching a USB2.0 hard disk the OS says
something like "fast USB device connected on slow USB port".
Also after disabling the onboard USB-ports the same problem.....

Any suggestions how to resolve this problem?

You need at least SP1 (SP2 preferred) for Windows XP to have USB 2.0
functionality. Then, you have to find your dysfunctional device in "device
manager" - it should have a yellow ? or an ! in front of it.

Right click on the device and chose "Update Driver". Allow an automatic
update. DO NOT allow the computer to search the web. What you need has
already been installed. It just has to be associated with the device. You
may be asked to reboot. If so - DO IT NOW, not later!

And you have SP1 or SP2 installed?

If you have the device connected to an add-in card, you may well need their
specific USB 2.0 drivers to be installed also.

....cough!...splutter ! mmmmm!

Via chipset ! Motherboard drivers ????, ....you might need to trundle along to MSI and download a new set of VIA four in one drivers - and also take a look the bios files for that board while you're there. You might even need to reflash your bios !

In any event, the MS USB 2.0 driver stack (4 files) will sometimes not install on Via boards, if when XP was installed - it was left with "best fit" drivers, (from XP's drivers' library), instead of the ones written specifically for it by your motherboard manufacturer.

Richard,

I did all that, but still no success...What surprises me is that when I look at the properties of the usb-drivers they are all dated 2001 ....
USB 2.0 was introduced in 2002....how is that possible?

When I tried to update the driver the OS aborts this process by "saying" that the drivers are up to date...

Richard,

I did all that, but still no success...

What's listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the device
manager?

You should have something like...

"NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller"

It's possible to have SP1 but still NOT USB2.0 support. It also matters HOW
you got to SPI. (eg upgrade or pre-installed by vendor etc). I know there is
a very good page in help and support that explains this but I couldn't find
it just now. I tried searching for USB2.0 just now but for some reason I get
zero pages. I'll post them if I can get my help and support to work!

Try reading this very carefully to see if it applies... .
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329632

Did your PC motherboard support USB2.0 before you upgraded? It's possible
that your drivers wern't upgraded... See this bit in the above link....

"Upgrading to USB 2.0 EHCI Host Controller

If you have a computer that supports USB 2.0, and if you have a preinstalled
USB 2.0 driver from the OEM, you continue to use the earlier preinstalled
drivers for USB 2.0 even after you install SP1. To upgrade to the USB 2.0
enhanced host controller driver in Windows XP SP1, follow these steps: "

My reading of this is that you may still be using old USB 2.0 drivers for
the motherboard not the new ones for your new card.

e.g.
<quote> The 1.10 filter patch fixes very specific issues under specific
circumstances, described below. Users who are unsure as to whether they
should install the patch can be assured that if they do install the patch,
even if it is not necessary, it will cause no harm to their system. The
patch will detect your systems configuration and install only when
necessary. If it has not installed then there is no need to try to install
it manually. The patch will only install on certain older VIA host
controller revisions. Under these circumstances, the patch will resolve the
following issues:

Fixes the issue when a connected USB hub that has no USB devices connected
will be disabled after another USB hub is attached at another available root
port.
Fixes the issue when transferring large of amounts of data, the system will
hang.
Avoids noise from a USB audio converter or speaker.
Supports a USB add-on card.
Under Win2000/XP: This patch will save all register values in the memory
before a system enters Stand By mode and then restore those registers when
the systems resumes. This therefore avoids the situation where USB devices
are not ready for use after a resume from Stand By mode.<End Quote>

Did the card come with any drivers? If so, install those and then
upgrade with the ones in the download at

The check is in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager to
look in USB devices for any 'Enhanced' Host controller. Enhanced
indicates USB 2.0, and if you double click and look on Drivers - Details
it should be using usbehci.sys not usbuhci.sys

I have experienced the same symptoms on a Dell 4100 (PIII, 800 MHz). I've
tried reloading drivers, changing PCI slots, using SP1 then SP2, using a
Belkin card and a CompUSA card. Same results.

Some other thread mensioned you need at least PCI 2.2 to use USB 2.0. Not
sure how to identify this. The Dell 4100 came with 1.1 ports. I've tried
disabling these legacy ports, but to no avail. And I'm using the most current
BIOS (but this is several years old).

There are lots of things to watch for in this one...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329632

eg quote:
"Installing the USB 2.0 drivers from Windows XP SP1 will overwrite any
third-party (vendor provided) USB 2.0 driver stacks for your PCI add-in
cards. Microsoft recommends that you remove these driver stacks before you
install the Windows XP SP1 USB 2.0 drivers."

Perhaps you need to re-install the makers card drivers after updating the
OS?

There are no manf drivers required or supplied. All it needs are the WinXP
native USB 2.0 drivers. After installing SP2, they are there and dated 2004.

I just recently re-installed XP on top of my XP system, then upgraded to the
lastest SP2. The ONLY problem I have is the one associated with recognizing
USB 2.0 devices. Once its found the hardware, it wants an installation disc
for the EHCI Driver. Help!

Didn't work - says its looking for a file called, "ousb2hub.sys, ousb2hub.sy_"

any more help?

Thanks!

ok - so I did a search and found this file under the windows\system32\drivers
directory - I pointed it there and it successfully copied it there. guess
something was just "disconnected" and the system resolved itself?

Anyway, thanks - you led me down the right diagnostic path.
