control panel missing internet options

Guest

my dad's sony stopped updating / downloading about Feb 21, 2007. he was
running ie7--there is no menu bar with internet options/tools . there is an
icon for internet options in control panel, but there is no name and it will
not open.

active x control will not show when connected. I believe this could be why
installs will not work.

please suggest fixes.

Thanks,
Sharon

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Do you get an error message like, "This operation has been cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this computer."?

Does the following key (either of them) exist?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet
Explorer/Restrictions/NoBrowserOptions
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet
Explorer/Restrictions/NoBrowserOptions
(If so - what is the value?)

Tried a 'System Restore' to a date where it was working?

What - if any - error do you get? Anything in the Event Log?

I looked in the registry but there is no Internet Explorer under
policies/microsoft in either of the two keys (current or local).

I do not get any error messages.

I tried to restore to an earlier date, but there is no improvement in the
problem.

Thanks,
Sharon

Internet Explorer is running in Maximized mode. I toggled to Full Screen
mode and back again to Maximized mode to check.

When I right click, my only options are to restore, minimize, exit. I
tried Alt + V +_ T, but nothing happened.

Again, no error messages are given.

I also followed the instruction at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555130

No change--I have not restarted the computer yet though.

Still didn't work. I am seriously contemplating re-installing windows. What
do you think about that.

Or can I copy the missing data from another computer somehow get it in the
registry. Since the INTERNET EXPLORER is not in the HKEY...I don't know what
else to do.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP...
